Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 5549

I love OO but have to save as a word doc all the time because everyone else still uses MS Office. It is becoming difficult to tell eveyone to install OO. I would love it if there was a way to have a popup message when opening a word doc file format that was created with OO. The pop message box could say that "This file was created using OpenOffice.org. However word is not able to display all the features used to create this document. It is recomened that you install OpenOffice and request this docuement in a swx format" That way I don't have to keep reminding people about OO. They would be reminded everytime they open a OO document I created. Just something to add to the wish list. (Of course I could just type that at the start of all my documents but popup messages are so much more cool) Thank you for your time. Sorry if this is not possible.
Brett, It's a nice idea. However, I'm pretty certain that it would make us more enemies than friends. A simpler thing that you could do would be to put, in small italic type in the footer of appropriate documents, "This document created with OpenOffice.org 1.0." You could even set this up as a template, so that all of your documents have it. I really think that demonstrating to other users how many people use OpenOffice.org will encourage them to try it more than an obtrusive pop-up. Please keep thinking of ideas to promote OpenOffice.org. It would be good, though, if you submitted ideas like this one to the Discuss or Dev@Marketing lists first for discussion before filing an IZ; Issues are really for things which don't need discussion. -Josh Berkus Marketing Lead Volunteer
