Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 55545
Takes too long to start OpenOffice
Last modified: 2009-08-20 07:56:33 UTC
Yesterday, bad thing happend to me. Well, it was not so bad, 'cause I found a bug (or maybe a feature). Ok, here's my story. My internet provider was out of service. So I couldn't get the internet works. And suddenly it takes about 30s to start office (apparently it was looking for something on net), use a command like this: $ ~/openoffice.org2.0/program/soffice I tried to stop the network # ifconfig eth0 stop and it helped. This time it takes only 4s. Conclusion? If your internet connection is broken (or too slow), it takes too long to start OpenOffice. Either you need good working connection or no connection at all.
Oh, and it's 2.0.0rc1_050923. Not a Beta2, but there was no option in combobox.
Framework issue.
.
I can reproduce this with OpenOffice 2.2.1 rc1 (m18)
set multi on in /etc/host.conf fixes the problem. Thanks to Rail for the tip.
add cc
I have the same problem on Kubuntu 6.06 but I have already "set multi on" in /etc/host.conf so I think the problem remains open. Tested with OOo-Dev (680m239) and version 2.3.1.
You need the following patch http://svn.gnome.org/svn/ooo-build/branches/ooo-build-2-3/patches/src680/dont-check-fqdn.diff
@ cartman : thanks for the info but when this patch will be included in development version ? I don't want build my own version but use and test standard one.
You can ask your Linux distribution to include it. I don't think upstream will like the patch.
why ?
Its basically a shortcut not a fix.
Still a problem?
OOO300m9 (Build:9358) Problem is still there.
I can't remember in which issue I saw that but if your PC is connected to your printer by a network, OOo try to detect printer at startup. If for some reason you use another network, it take a while before OOo stops the detection. You can tell OOo do not detect printer at startup by using an environment variable: export SAL_DISABLE_SYNCHRONOUS_PRINTER_DETECTION="true" I don't know if it is the right root of the problem, but you can give it a try.
I have no printer connected, but I tried your suggestion. It doesn't change anything.
SBA: This issue has a target set but is still in state of "Unconfirmed". Please re-check with OOo 3.0 or younger if it is (still) valid. Then confirm it or set an appropriate resolution. Thank you.
does it also happen with the latest OpenOffice.org Build?
DEV300_m44_native_packed-1_en-US.9392, nothing changed
please give us more information about you start openoffice.org. some data about your maschine are helpful I can't reproduce this on my maschines where someone are older then 5 years
I try to reproduced, but without success. - description 1 - first enable the automatic update 'everyday' 2 - count the time to start the OpenOffice write application with cable ethernet on 3 - and then count the time to start the application, and the time doesn't change (still around 5-6 seconds) - sys info OS <Linux 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Wed Nov 26 19:14:11 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux> OpenOffice <000310m11(build:9399)> KDE <3.5.10>
so what is the result is it still a valid issue?
reassigned
OpenOffice.org 3.1.0 OOO310m11 (Build: 9399) Still a same. Suggested workaround by set 'multi on' in /etc/host.conf doesn't help neither.
@ ojec 5 to 6 seconds are not slow. so please describe what you see and what you expect otherwise this issue is invalid
A final comment from me before closing: When cutting the network connection on a Linux box you will observe a slowdown in many areas. This holds especially true on Gnome. If you terminate the network connection via Network Manager then Gnome will notice the change and work correctly, so will OOo. If the connection is unexpectedly interrupted (also when just stopping/killing related services you have this behavior. And as said above: 6 seconds are not particularly slow. Performance optimizations are done in the performance project context which ultimately will accelerate the application but probably not for the sitation described within this issue.
