Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 57602
Prototype Requirement: Not a Microsoft Project clone
Last modified: 2009-07-12 19:26:36 UTC
This task is a part of issue 57601 "Requirements specification for project management tool prototype": http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57601
Should start up as an Imendio Planner clone, but have readily available all the features of Microsoft Project or other project management software that are Real World (tm) useful.
As easy for the casual user as a spreadsheet with the columns Task People/Resources (Planned) Start (Planned) End (Actual) Start (Actual) End
For those without access to Imendio, can you please elaborate on the startup requirements?
On Fedora, installs on menu as Applications -> Office -> Project Management. Opens with left hand panel of icons for different views, similar to MS Project, Outlook, Evolution etc. Icons are "Gantt Chart", "Tasks", "Resources", "Resource Usage". Default is Gantt Chart, with Task WBS, Name, Work in middle panel, and Gantt Chart in right hand panel. Tasks can be added and edited in this view. Second view is Tasks, similar to Gantt Chart view but with more columns and no Gantt Chart. Columns are WBS, Name, Start, Finish, Work, Duration, Slack, Cost, and Assigned To. Third view is Resources, with Name, Short Name, Type (Work or Material), Group, Email, and Cost (presumably fixed for materials and hourly for personnel). Last view is "Resource Usage", showing each resource, and each task allocated to each resource. There is a Gantt-like resource chart in the right panel, showing time allocation for each resource and each task per resource. The resources can be collapsed outline style so that only the resource is shown with its usage timeline, thus summarizing the individual tasks. Saves files by default in ".planner" format (XML with MrProject DTD), can export to HTML or import Microsoft Project XML. Tasks and resources can be edited by right-click -> Properties. There are very few additional fields other than those mentioned above - predecessors can be set either graphically or by entering them into the properties sheet for a task. There is almost no provision for tracking schedule or costs to baseline. Arbitrary custom fields can be added, which could presumably be used by external report generators reading the XML file.
The first release needs a WBS, a way of saving the project (preferably with an extension to the Open Document Standard), and some serious thought to the internal data structures which the application will use.
I'll think the progress of the task is going very well. With the wishes I have seen so far it will never become a clone of Microsoft Project - or any other project management tool. I'll change the status to WORKSFORME.
