Description dbmoyes 2005-11-21 10:32:04 UTC
I was attempting to show several boy scouts at a merit badge midway how to
perform a mail merge in OO, and in Microsoft Word. I recently upgraded to
version 2.0, and discovered that mail merge doesn't work like it should:

1. Create a spreadsheet in Calc
   a. first row contains the field names "First", "Last", "Occupation"
   b. following two rows contain the actual data
   c. Save database as source.ods
2. in Writer, click on File-> Wizards->Address & Data sources
   a. Select "other external data sources" (this option really should be
removed, or changed to a check box rather thaSn a radio button)
   b. click next->Settings
   c. Select Spreadsheet from the drop-down list, click next
   d. Click Browse
      1. select the file source.ods, and open it
   e. click Finished
   f. click on Field Assignemnt
   g.Assing the fields
     1. hey wait, I can't select anything, only field I can select is "none"
3. Repeat step 2 a few times, verify database was saved
4. Inform th Boy Scouts that OpenOffice 2.0 came out of beta prematurely,
and that this used to work in 1.1.4
5. Go on to show how to show how to use a spreadsheet
6. Reboot to windows and show Microsoft Office XP Word's mail merge feature.

What kind of data in 1b?
Could you provide a sample for such database file?

I checked with “2.0 German version WIN XP: [680m3(Build8968)]†and it seems that
I can confirm the problem.

In my screenshot you see the same result with 680m118: there is no selection,
only <none>

@dbmoyes:
that's the problem?
Workaround: the mail merge assistant will ask you to assign fields, and there
assignment will work.

We had a similar problem in issue 51833 for DBase-databases, which is fixed for
2.0.1, and I believe that this is a DUP of that one. So DUP, pls feel free to
reopen this issue if you find out that the problem discussed here is different
from the one in issue 51833

dbmoyes, can you pls specify your OS and Platform?

Yes definitely duoble to 51833 and also reproducible with other kind of database.
I just wanted to be sure.
Your workaround (until OOo2.0.1 is public) is to connect a new database by
mailmerge dialog step3 and then "Match Fields..."
