Description andreschnabel 2005-12-04 10:26:00 UTC
The Help - about dialog does not show the full version number, what should be
2.0.1. Using ctrl S-D-T to identify the Milestone / Build numer is no option, as
the user would need to map milestone to version number but usually has not the
knowledge to do so.

To me, this is a stopper for 2.0.1, as comon users would not be able to tell the
correct version number, when searching for help at the user lists or filing
issues in issuezilla.
Comment 1 pavel 2005-12-04 15:34:43 UTC
This is surely not stopper.

But, yes, we should adopt About to contain the accurate version number, not only
2.0.

Does StarOffice contain identification of the patchlevel in About?
Comment 2 jolatt 2005-12-04 16:52:02 UTC
No, Staroffice doesn't. You must use ctrl s-d-t to show this info.

andreschnabel is right, when he says, that this info should be shown in the
help-about-dialog.

@ mh: Please decide.
Comment 4 Martin Hollmichel 2005-12-06 11:06:27 UTC
I only can second pavel: no stopper, but having in the about box a clear version
number would help.
Comment 5 Martin Hollmichel 2005-12-09 11:08:52 UTC

Comment 11 lohmaier 2005-12-17 17:51:10 UTC
the attached patch uses PACKAGEVERSION instead of PRODUCTVERSION. (the
about-dialog reads the version-info from the configuration files)
Comment 12 8daysaweek 2005-12-20 16:51:56 UTC
I believe this should have been a stopper, as there is now the potential for
confusion over which version is installed, and no easy way to check!

I am disappointed to see the target is now OOo 2.0.3. Is there any way this
could be sorted for 2.0.2?

I don't think that Martin will fix the issue. Let me add Peter ot the CC list...
Comment 15 bobharvey 2005-12-23 00:06:25 UTC
I have to agree. the full version number should be easy to find.
Comment 16 9point9 2005-12-23 09:00:25 UTC
The version number was far more visible in 1.x. It was on the top of each
window. It would seem sensible to put it back there.
Comment 17 jolatt 2005-12-23 13:04:23 UTC
Thats IMO nonsense.
It's enough, when the full version number ( 2.01 instead of 2.0) with build
number is seen in the about window.
Comment 18 9point9 2005-12-23 14:20:09 UTC
It's not nonsense, it makes perfect sense. The user should always be concious
of what version they are using. The splash screen only says '2.0' which many
people would think to be different to 2.0.1 so most users would just say that
they are using 2.0 if asked, as they would not have looked deeply for the actual
version number.

In 1.9.x builds it clearly gave the version number (in 1.9.x form) in the
installer, now that has gone, all there is is 2.0 in 2.0.1. Many users just
won't know what version they are running unless it says so more explicitly.

If people think they are using 2.0 when they aren't, this is going to cause a
lot of problems for issue reporting in future as issues will be mismarked as
2.0.0 whereas they should be a later version.
Comment 19 jolatt 2005-12-23 15:42:54 UTC
But not on the top of every window, as you wrote. That is nonsense.

You may be right with the splash screen. I forgot it, because its always
deactivated. But this is not so important an you should consider, that the
splash is seen only a few seconds when OOo starts. With enabled quickstarter
only once a time in a computer session.

The about window is it. This would be like in other programs and therefor
userfriendly.
Comment 20 richlv 2005-12-28 08:27:36 UTC
this seems to be a subset of issue 11465, so maybe we can set that issue to
depend on this one ?
Comment 21 kjmck 2005-12-28 21:52:34 UTC
I would like to see both the opening splash screen and the Help About screen
prominently show the full version number and the build.

When I installed OpenOffice.org the package name was openoffice.org2, the splash
screen showed "OpenOffice.org 2.0", and Help About showed "OpenOffice.org 2.0".
Only in the very small print on the very last line of the about screen was I
able to tell that I was actually running version 1.9.something.

In other words, I was being mislead about which version of OpenOffice.org was
actually installed and running. This is not acceptable.

with 36 votes, 8 duplicates and a proposed patch it would really make sense to
set target to 2.0.2.

mh: could you please consider to retarget
Comment 26 Martin Hollmichel 2006-01-17 19:43:28 UTC

changed string in about box as workaround (mh20137), we need a automated
mechanism for the builds in 2.0.3, filed new issue 61849 for it.
