Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 59293
Internal hyperlink targeting imported notes slide crashes Draw
Last modified: 2005-12-14 09:01:00 UTC
When importing a presentation from Impress to Draw, Draw creates a 'normal' and a 'Notes' slide for each slide imported from Impress. These slides do not show up in the navigator, but they do appear in the hyperlink target selector (which is, IMHO an error in itself). When actually setting a link referring to one of these slides, clicking on this link will crash Draw. Show procedure summary: - Convert a presentation from Impress to Draw (save as .odg file) - Create a link to one of the converted 'Notes' pages (showing as <Slide name> (Notes) in the hyperlink target selector) - Click on the link, Draw crashes
I can confirm - OOo 2.0, Windows XP SP2. Steps taken to confirm: 1) Created arbitrary Presentation (w/ notes) 2) Saved said presentation as .odg 3) Opened the .odg w/ Draw 4) Insert -> Hyperlink 5) Click "Document" in the selector at the left 6) Clicked the "Target" button (blue, red, yellow concentric circles) 7) Set "Target" to one of the notes pages "<Page Name> (Notes)" 8) Clicked Apply 9) Clicked Apply 10) Closed dialog 11) Clicked the hyperlink -> Draw crashed However, when I tried this with 2.0.1RC2 Draw did not crash. Instead, it opened the notes page successfully. Thus, marking as fixed in 2.0.1RC2 Also, changed Summary from: "Internal hyperlink to imported notes slide crashes Draw" to: "Internal hyperlink targetting imported notes slide crashes Draw" @Helpman - if you need this functionality, can you try 2.0.1RC2 (obtainable from the developer's snapshots page) and see if that solves your problem? If not, we can possibly reopen. Steve
@Steve - yes, technically I can confirm it works now with the RC4 - clicking the link takes me to the notes page ... but - now I'm completely lost in terms of the concept: - The notes pages are only available via the 'Hyperlink Target' dialogue - not via the navigator. - If the notes page is displayed, I can flip through the slides using the navigator - but there is *no* way to return to the standard view (unless I have missed an option or a menu entry). So, now I'm stuck in the notes view and cannot edit the original slides anymore. Plus - the documentation does not give any information about this but, but says there is an 'Insert > Notes' menu entry, which actually doesn't exist. What I think is missing is the 'view switcher' that is present in impress for changing between normal and notes view. Thanks - Jens
I agree - I was pretty confused about the actual operation of the notes pages, including how to switch back and forth between notes and slides in Draw. However, when I address issues I try to stick to the original issue reported, so I didn't address the actual functionality beyond duplicating the crash. My response to the further difficulties would be to just use Impress, since Draw is really a drawing program, not a presentation editing program. Even though it seems like things should work in Draw, Impress is the component that's designed to handle such activity. But you can always file seperate issues for why or why not you believe the navigation functionality to be broken in Draw. For example, you could file a feature request for the switcher to be present in Draw as well as Impress... I haven't looked into it; it's just an idea.
Reopened.

Closed. Thanks for your help.
Completely agree to your last comment - I recon I should file the navigation bit as a separate issue. I'm actually using draw because of it's layer capabilities and it would just have been a comfortable option for me to be able to add notes to slides as well - so basically the best of both worlds from Draw & Impress ;-) Anyhow, I recon both programs are really close in terms of functionality, and I always have a hard time choosing which one to use. So maybe in the far future there'll be only one drawing/charting component. Again, thanks for your help! Oh - and BTW - how *do* I switch back to 'normal' view?
Well, switching back is some kind of problem at the moment, I must say. since the crash is gone in pp1 I hope that the switch problem is going to be adressed in i59282. But I just found out an acceptable way: just open the navigator (F5) and click on the wanted page - your are switched to it.
