Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 59817
some fonts (Times, Palatino) are not anti-aliased
Last modified: 2008-06-16 21:11:31 UTC
Fedora Core 4 on PC 1. This PC has a Matrox G450 videocard. FC4 contains OO 1.19. Starting OO 1.19 ==> all fonts are OK Installed OO 2.01 ==> when clicking on the font-selection dropdown box, the last font drawn in this box is drawn without anti alias. The box is not filled with more fonts. The keyboard- and mouse-focus are in this box and I am not able to click on the other apps on the desktop. Other apps on the desktop are still running, but I am not able to click on them and give them the focus. I have to sitch to a console using ctrl-alt-fX and kill soffice, in order to get the keyboard and mouse back in my x-session. Mandrake 10.2 on PC 1 ==> same result. PC2: laptop with Mandrake 10.2 On the laptop those problem fonts are also drawn without anti alias. However, I do not have this problem with font-selection dropdown box taking the keyboard- and mouse focus without ever releasing it. See the URL for an example. Because I discovered that using OO 1.19 on FC4 this problem is there, apparantly something has changed from OO 1.19 towards OO 2.01 with regards of the fonts and how they are drawn without anti alias. Currently OO 2.01 can not be used. On PC 1 with the Matrox G450 videocard, using xinerama, OO 2.01 effectively kills the keyboard and mouse. On my laptop OO 2.01 does not drawn several fonts with anti alias, making them ugly. See example in the URL. Please not that this example shows a setting of 2 for the smallest fontsize. This is on purpose in order to be sure that OO was going to drawn the fonts with anti alias. There seems to be a couple of related issues, although I am not sure about that: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=53085 http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=45298
Sorry, made a typo error Because I discovered that using OO 1.19 on FC4 this problem is NOT there, apparantly something has changed from OO 1.19 towards OO 2.01 with regards of the fonts and how they are drawn without anti alias.

Thx for paying attention. It is appriciated.
To summarize, some fonts (Times, Palatino) are not antialiased, and your problem looks like a duplicate of issue 57530. Therefore, I am closing this issue. You also mentioned a cursor focus problem, but according to Basic Rules < http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/basic_rules.html#one_per_issue >, but we can only accept one problem per issue. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 57530 ***

This issue is related to issue 57530. However, issue 57530 does not completely describe the problem. Issue 57530 only deals with "ugly fonts on Mandrake" while the problem is more severe then just ugly fonts on Mandrake. The problem is more severe because: - The problem with the anti aliased fonts do also appear on Fedora Core 4, using OO 2.01. The problem is not limited to Mandrake as suggested by issue 57530. - The problem with the anti aliased fonts makes OO 2.01 unusable because of fact that OO takes the mouse- and keyboard focus while drawing those problem fonts in the font selections dropdown box, and never release the mouse- and keyboard focus, making the complete desktop of the PC unusable. The problem of losing the mouse- and keyboard focus is not a separate, new problem; it is solely related to the problem of the anti aliased fonts, and the way OO 2.01 deals with them. It does not appear anywhere else within OO 2.01; the problem only appears when OO tries to drawn those problem fonts, without anti alias, in the font selection dropdown box. So, issue 57530 describes only partely the complete problem. I would suggest to open this issue and close issue 57530, because: - the problem is bigger and more severe as suggested by issue 57530, - when this issue is solved most likely issue 57530 will be solved. And - when issue 57530 is solved, this issue might not be solved, because issue 57530 does not mention Fedora Core 4 and the related mouse- and keyboard problem. Also, issue 57530 has a priority of P3, suggesting it might be possible to work with OO despite the problem with the fonts. This is not case. It is not possible to work with OO 2.01.

When using OO 1.9.104 on Fedora Core 4, it is possible to do a printscreen (using ksnapshot). When using OO 2.01 on Fedora Core 4, it is not possible to do a printscreen, because keyboard and mouse do not work anymore. Therefor I attached a photo of the monitor on which OO is running (there are 2 monitors, the PC has a matrox G450 and is running in xinerama mode). As you can see, OO tries to fill the font selection drop down box with the fonts. The last one drawn is not drawn with anti alias. After this one, the desktop is dead because the mouse and keyboard are not working anymore.
> However, issue 57530 does not completely describe the problem. > Issue 57530 only deals with "ugly fonts on Mandrake" > while the problem is more severe then just ugly fonts on Mandrake. Just because so far an issue is only publicly confirmed on one system does not imply it only affects the one system. Issue 57530 deals with non-anti-aliased "aliased" fonts on X11 systems. In fact, I use Fedora Core 4 and have the same problem with antialiasing.
I discovered OO 2.01 within the devel/cooker repository of Mandriva. This version of OO does not have the anti-alias problem, nor this this mdk-version of OO 2.01 have a problem with the font selection box. Apperently Mandriva knows both the problem and the solution. The devel/cooker OO 2.01 seems to run fine on Mandrake 10.2. I will be testing and trying it for a couple of days.
Reassigned to ES.
According to your last comment, you would make some tests in a couple of days. What the results? Do you have problems with latest version of OOo ? Thank you. Hwoarang
Did try the latest version of OO. No progress; still the same problem. Still running Mandrake 10.2 aka LE 2005 with all updates. Downloaded the rpms as found on the OO.org site.
Do you still have the same problem in the current build? http://download.openoffice.org/680/?intcmp=1235
