Description desperado 2006-01-13 13:36:08 UTC
Since OOo2.0.1, MS Word files with embedded MS Word files no longer crash OOo
when they are opened (see issue #45333). This has exposed a significant
regression with respect to OOo 1.1.4 which makes embedded text documents
(specifically MS Word files) un-usable in practice.

In OOo 1.1.4, an embedded MS Word file is represented with an icon. Double
clicking on the icon opens the embedded file in a new window. This is the same
behaviour as MS Office 2000.

In OOo 2.0.1, an embedded MS Word file is represented by what looks like the top
left of the document. Double clicking on representation opens the embedded file
in the same window as the outer/containing document. The view on the embedded
file has the same size as the representation (i.e. very small). There does not
seem to be any way to open the embedded file in a new window as was the default
with OOo 1.1.4.

While opening the embedded file in the same window as the outer/containing
document may be reasonable for small fragments of text, it is **totally**
unreasonable when the embedded file is a 10 page document.

Please revert to the OOo 1.1.4 behaviour or at least make it possible to obtain
the OOo 1.1.4 behaviour.

This problem description is specific to text documents because I receive a lot
of these. I don't receive documents with embedded spreadsheets although I guess
the problem would be the same. It must be possible to open a substantial
embedded spreadsheet in a new window.

in Word you can choose whether an object should be embedded as icon or as
document. If you choose as icon, Writer displays an icon too. I could not
reproduce the problem with only the top left of the document showing. Could you
attach a sample document? You can choose to open Word objects in Writer, Tools-
>Options->Load/Save->Microsoft Office->[L]Winword to OpenOffice Writer...
(converts on _loading_ of the document), if enabled, embedded objects open in
the same window in Writer; if not, embedded objects are opened in a new window
in Word for me.

The attached MS Word file is a test file specially cut down from one of the
files showing this bug.

Screendump word2000.png shows the results of opening this file with Word 2000.
Double-clicking on the embedded file opens that embedded file in a new window.

Screendump ooo114.png shows the results of opening this file with ooo114 (on
linux with load/save microsoft office options ticked for winword, excel and
powerpoint.
Double-clicking on the embedded file opens that embedded file in a new window
just like Word 2000.

Screendump ooo201.png shows the results of opening this file with ooo201 (on
linux with the same options as the ooo114 setup). This is not the same as ooo114
or Word 2000. This difference is secondary.

In ooo201, double clicking on the embedded file produces screendump
ooo201-2.png. The embedded file is opened in place in the outer/containing
document and has the same size as the original icon. This is very definately not
the same as ooo114 or Word 2000. When the embedded file is a 10-12 page
document, it is impossible to work with the embedded file in ooo201.

Is this clearer?

if you have Tools -> Options -> Load/Save -> Microsoft Office -> [L] Winword to
OpenOffice.org Writer... enabled, the embedded document will show up as it does
for you in the screenshots. If you disable this option, you will see an icon (or
the filename in an icon sized field) too.

Comment 10 lars 2006-01-15 17:14:51 UTC
having "Winword to OpenOffice.org Writer" Ms Office OLE conversion enabled leads
to Word OLE objects embedded as icon being displayed as embedded as document
(preview) in the size of an embedded icon link. They should still display as
icon and open in a new Writer window if possible.
Comment 11 lars 2006-01-15 17:15:25 UTC
confirmed on Windows XP Pro SP2 with OOo 2.0.1
Comment 12 michael.ruess 2006-01-24 13:33:25 UTC
MRU->MAV: when the object conversion is activated in
Tools.Options.LoadSave.MSOffice the icon view of the objects is destroyed when
importinmg them from MS formats.

Changing the target.
Comment 14 mikhail.voytenko 2007-01-26 08:04:28 UTC
MAV->MRU: Seems to be a duplicate to issue 60121 that was fixed in fwk59 (
integrated in SRC680m201 ). Could you please verify.
Comment 15 mikhail.voytenko 2007-01-26 08:05:17 UTC
Setting to duplicate. Please reopen if there is still a way to reproduce the
problem.

Confirmed, this is now fixed in OO 2.2 by the mentioned Issue.
