Description tsudhonimh 2002-06-26 16:26:48 UTC
Apparently it is not possible to draw an object in OO and insert it directly into the gallery to be reusable
as a gallery item. Either the documentation is vague on this issue or it's not possible.

To be really useful, it has to be possible to create an object, select that object, and save it
to the gallery as a ratio or dimensionally protected entity for reuse. Then we (being a company's artists,
or the OO community) could ship the galleries the way ECAD users ship libraries of entities.

It should be possible to break the entity to reuse the components or create a modification.

Please have a look in the help files for a theme called "Inserting
Graphics From a Document in the Gallery". I think this is all that you
asked for. This is not only working with graphics but with objects and
text,too.

Misleading documentation needs clarification:
"Draw objects that you have created with the Draw functions floating toolbar, cannot be incorporated in the gallery."
This led one of the engineers to believe that it was not possible to draw with any toolbar that could float (they all float) and insert the the resulting drawing in the gallery.
A link to the toolbar in question or a better explanation of what toolbar you are talking about would clarify this. It appears, after a bit of experimentation, that only DRAW and IMPRESS are capable of producing objects that can go into the gallery, but I can't find any direct statement to that effect.

And incomplete documentation about the gallery:
It appears that a "theme" has multiple components, not explained in the documentation, named by an internal scheme that is also not explained in the documentation. It also appears that the gallery will not recognize anything but its own internal name scheme.
I expected themes to work much like the plug-ins of GIMP: put it in the right directory and it automatically shows up on the menus with whatever the name is. But it doesn't appear to work that way.

This leads to a problem that the documentation does not appear to have a solution for:
How can I send a theme (symbols for components) to ALL the engineers who need it without sending something with a name that overwrites a theme they may have created locally? How can we make their installation of OO pick up the new theme so they can use the new symbols? Theme must be emailed - we don't have a common network drive.

Seems that the help files for the gallery need some improvement. Under
"adding graphics" it really says:"Draw objects that you have created
with the Draw functions floating toolbar, cannot be incorporated in
the gallery," What is quite misleading. Reassigned to Volker.

Sorry, wrong owner. Reassigned to Frank.

UFI, can you pls check that

Since now all drawing objects created from the drawing objects toolbar
can be dragged to the Gallery, I deleted the wrong paragraph from
text/common/guide/dragdrop_gallery.
re themes: currently it is not possible to copy, save, export, import
or e-mail complete themes - you must do it file by file or object by
object. We are working on this, but I don't know when and in which
version it will be possible.

"re themes: currently it is not possible to copy, save, export, import
or e-mail complete themes - you must do it file by file or object by
object."

Do you mean I can send a file full of circuit component drawings and any theme and gallery objects it uses will go with it? Or do you mean we send the drawing and everyone drags the components into their private gallery? (that's the current method)

As a work-around: a clearer explanation of how to use shared themes over a network might help. It appears to be possible, but I haven't made it work yet.

Documentation cannot be changed for Beta.
If required we will add some doc for OOo 2.0

I must apologize that this bug somehow disappeared from my attention.
The Help will be updated later as time allows.
In a network installation, the Gallery consists of two parts, one on
the server and one for each user. You find some hints in the Setup
Guide and in the Help for the keyword "Paths". The server part of the
Gallery can only be extended by the sys admin or anyone else with full
rights to the server, and following that each user can use the
additional objects (an Office restart may be necessary first)
To extend the Gallery on the Server installation do the following
(currently not tested by doc team):
1. As a normal user, add a new theme to your Gallery and drop the
objects into the theme.
2. As sys admin, open a file manager, find the new folder in
{soinstall}/user/Gallery. Copy the folder, together with the new
created Gallery files .sdg, .sdv, .thm, containing administrative info
about this new folder, to the {serverinstall}/share/Gallery folder on
the server.

UFI->HI: text is changed OK, so this bug can be closed. A new guide
doc will be written later to address the network / path / gallery
questions.
