Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 61819
No Asian word break iteration in the on-line help is needed for Asian culture.
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:29:58 UTC
To comply with Asian culture, there might be necessity of changing behavior of search function of the on-line help. In short, no word break iteration would be needed. If a user want to do that, she does so by manually inserting a space character between words to divide them. That is the behavior of google.com for Japanese. A current search function in the on-line help seems to work in the following way: 1. Divides a search-for text into several words using a word break iterator for user's language. 2. Looks for the individual words. 3. Lists titles of the page that includes at least one of the words. 4. Highlights those words in the chosen page. Since Asian texts usually do not includes a white space between words, nobody has been noticed such the fact that a search-for text is divided into some words. The necessity of dividing a get-searched text into words for Asian culture should be carefully considered.
With current implementation of OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 Japanese, Search term: フォントワークギャラリ within Writer finds the on-line help pages that includes the following words: フォントワーク ギャラ リ That is not an expected behavior for Japanese. Searching for フォントワークギャラリ should match only the pages that includes フォントワークギャラリ. If a user want to look for either フォント for font, ワーク for work, ギャラリ for galley, she should fill the Search term text box with フォント ワーク ギャラリ. Every words should be separated with one of more space letters, including u3000 known as an IDEOGRAPHIC SPACE, in the similar way as Western culture does. That is a common manner used by well-known Internet search engines such as Google and Yahoo!.

This looks like a defect in Help Viewer's search engine
Thank you for considering this topic. To avoid confusion, just one thing should be added: An Western style of word break iteration is still needed, but no Asian one.
