Download page template enhancements

Suggested new download page structure
Created attachment 2110 [details] download page templates draft version
Changes made to previous tryout 7 (see mailing-lists): * Internal CSS included in zip but not linked to on pages * Revised top and left-hand navbar tryouts removed * Rounded corners to top and bottom announcement bars removed as do not fit in with current OOorg page, and also cause rendering problems on occasions * Request for translating pages to new languages added to top announcement bar and linked to webmasters@openoffice.org * Links to languages and opsys now correct * No items in Download help boxes (to be chosen) Suggestions for improvement: * On second level pages, thick vertical bars rendered on both IE and Mozilla (generally only happens on Mozilla). Only solution I have ever come across when this happens is redo tables all over again. Maybe Todd can explain why this happens * On second level pages, as well as signposting opsys, suggest adding language too * Download help box can contain current help links on current download page and link to current pages as are instead of the 1-5.html pages in same folder
These are great, Miljenko. Two issues though. 1.) can we change the webmaster@openoffice.org to point to the contacts page? 2.) this is a larger issue - also being discussed in the releases list - I am a strong supporter adopt a standard directory layout, with one of the directories being the version, and removing the version from the filename. this way, we would have a standard URL to point to downloadfiles, for example: http://mirrorsite.com/OpenOffice.org/<version>/linux/main/install.tar.gz This way, all we need to do on release is change the version number. This can be done very fast with search and replace. I estimate that with this system, we can turnaround a release in 15 minutes flat. Cheers, Martijn
Created attachment 2111 [details] substitution of webmasters@ mailtos with contact page link
Hi Martijn: * Links to webmasters@ changed to contact page link as suggested * Broken links eliminated (sw folder changed to sv folder) A standard directory structure for all mirrors would be an excellent idea as it would mean we could be absolutely clear about the accuracy of the download page (any problem with links would be easily testable as all would have the same structure), and in fact anybody could maintain it easily. It would then not be necessary to have the bulwark of the lang projects "looking after" their own pages and their own interests (a nice but currently inappropriate idea as most languages do not have their own lang projects, and there would thus be a half-baked structure of responsibility for quite a while to come - a recipe for mistakes and misunderstandings). If this is to go ahead, I can start working on the mirror links per language according to the current download page, simply modifying them with the standard structure you suggest so a user click=latest version, not just the directory where the latest version amongst many is contained. I would however need guidance for the filenames depending on opsys. These pages could then I suggest be enhanced once coordination of mirror directories for all languages currently served was communicated, achieved, and checked. Miljenko
committed the files under www/templates/download. check it out. http://www.openoffice.org/templates/download - thias should really be in website.openoffice.org, but the the project skeleton would get in the way - this way it is rendered as it should. btw - louis, CVS is acting strange lately, and it's making me rather uncomfortable uploading - i don't like to see sentences like "waiting to obtain lock from tigrisc" etc....
Pages rendered at http://www.openoffice.org/templates/download are far less readable than previous tryout at: http://www.xs4all.nl/~dosemete/ooo/download-pages-7/index.html Apart from that, fine I think. Issues: accent on A of Asia Pacific needs to be removed and language chosen added to second level pages so users can be sure they have chosen the language page they were looking for. Will do both changes in the next couple of days.
Created attachment 2121 [details] Modifications to improve readability of index page and add language names to mirror pages
Changes made include: * Element-specific font sizes and line heights on index page table to improve readability (don't know how it actually comes out when served under SourceCast - may be worse than currently) * Languages now signposted on all mirror pages * Portuguese and Chinese mirror pages now include tables for both languages * Other slight layout changes made If the index page is OK, I think these pages are ready to be used/modified/improved by whoever (though proofreading of links should be carried out by someone who has not worked with the files previously).
Miljenko, can you please upload this file again, and make sure to select "Binary File" as the attachment type? This way, we can actually download it without corruption (the others i have to download, and then remove by hand an invalid header) This is important, since the way you save it determines how the file is served by the server, and if wrong, will confuse the browser, and, in this case, corrupt the zip file. Cheers, Martijn
Created attachment 2122 [details] Re-send of wrongly-sent zip file
Re-sent as binary. This question ought to be covered by the new IssueZilla interface, so people do not unnecessarily send an HTML file with stripped headers as an HTML file, and do send it as a binary, as per your instructions. Perhaps a short help box to the right of the file types to be chosen from would be useful? Or since nobody will ever be sending HTML with header files to OOorg, simply eliminate the HTML option and turn the binary option into binary/HTML-header-stripped files. Previous comments on previous corrupted attachment sent are applicable to the one I have just sent.
Created attachment 2144 [details] Download home page - 9K version
Revised home download page: tables simplified; most spacer gifs replaced by nbsp; most style information removed; tried converting font info into stylesheet but the two files were both 12K so I couldn't see the point; removed tabs as per Patrick Mineault's suggestion, and reduced file size to 9K - it does work!!! :-) removed different language links from Mac table and replaced with link to developer version only; someone who knows could do the same to Solaris (or tell me which languages Solaris is localised to and I'll do it), but simply eliminating the A tag from the corresponding language, rather than eliminating the language itself, so as not to make layout un-uniform; added instructions to top announcement bar (I think they're unnecessary but people normally complain that the written words is missing even when there's only one thing you can do on a page); localised and internationalised in bottom announcement bar changed to localized and internationalized; rest of files to follow later today; Miljenko
Created attachment 2145 [details] Full set of download page files
Changes made to previous attachment: Download help page information from original page restructured in order to coincide with download process (content *not* changed however to any significant degree); Text added to mirror pages table to explain the importance of looking out for the language code in the filename; Portuguese and Chinese files with double tables for versions of each language; Tables simplified in mirror pages, and made compliant with NS 4.72 - most spacer gifs removed; Miljenko
Created attachment 2147 [details] Corrections (word "version" added) to the following files in tr/ folder: lin.html; win.html; macx.html; sol.html
closing issues since Miljenko's CVS setup is working.
