Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 62600
Incorrect fonts after export to MS PowerPoint format
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:21:02 UTC
Problem is described at http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/ (in czech language, but I think it is clear for all from pictures)... Short description in English: 1) document in OOo Impress (http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/test_diakritiky_ooo_201.odp), used fonts "Arial" and Times New Roman" - all is O.K. 2) export to MS PowerPoint format (http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/test_diakritiky_ooo_201.ppt); fonts in MS PowerPoint viewer (version 2003) are incorrect - czech characters are different from others (see http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/test_diakritiky_ooo_201_ppt_detail.png)... 3) checking exported file in full MS PowerPoint: czech characters are in "Lucida Sans Unicode" (wrong), others in "Arial" or "Times New Roman" (correct) 5) this problem appears only after export from OOo version 2.x - OOo version 1.1.5 works fine (as described at web page mentioned above).
Reassigned.
I can't reproduce the bug with the wrong font. PLease attach a bugdoc to reproduce te bug. I can reproduce the bug with the different look of some czech characters in the PPT-Viewer but in PPT 2003 the same characters in the same document looks ok.
cgu: what do you mean by term "bugdoc"? I add: incorrect czech characters (font Lucida Sans Unicode instead od Arial od Times New Roman which are originally used) appears in PPT2003 czech version (I'm not able to check the bug in original = english PPT2003 - I have not it). I will add some screenshots from PPT2003 czech version to http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/ (but give me some time, please)...
Sorry for confounding you. I saw the link to the png first and thought all links are screenshots. I downloaded the bugdocs (the odp and the PPT file) and will have a look again.
cgu: never mind... I added correct and wrong versions with capitals on http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/index.html#capitals and some screenshots from full MS PowerPoint (only older wrong *.ppt without capitals, but with two highlighted different characters) on http://members.chello.cz/prostor1/oooimpress/index.html#ppt.
Set to new and change the target.
I can reproduce the bug. Please have a look.
sj: The problem is that the PowerPoint Viewer is not able to properly display Unicode characters. In OOo Version 1.1.5 we stored the characters using system encoding, but this is not as good as using Unicode.

sj: "WONTFIX - closed"... I can't believe what I'm reading. It means any presentation made with OOo Impress WILL NEVER BE correctly readable or editable in MS PowerPoint, does it? Although the majority of people uses the MS PP.... Can you be so kind and tell me how I can propagate and spread OOo with such bug (sorry, with such "feature" - see B. Gates etc.). Really good point of departure to switch MS Office -> OOo....
sj->jirkaz: Sorry, I mixed your problem up with another problem where the characters are not displayed within the PPT97 viewer. I agree that there exist a font and not a character problem, and certainly this has to be fixed within OOo.
I can confirm this with greek characters. The symptoms are exactly the same: Use Times New Roman in OOo Impress. Export to MS PPT. Greek characters come out as "Lucida Sans Unicode" (wrong). Western characters (including accents) come out correctly. Re-importing into OOo shows all the characters as Times New Roman again. Additional information: 1. OOo 2.0.4 in WinXP SP2. Have also tried OOo 2.0.1 with the same results. 2. It doesn't seem to matter what the original font is: I have tried Arial, Palatino Linotype, Times New Roman, Tahoma and Verdana. They all come out as Lucida Sans Unicode. 3. Changing the system language in Regional Options makes no difference. 4. I have tried it with MS Powerpoint Viewer 2003, also with MS Powerpoint 2000 (9.0.2716) which confirms font is Lucida Sans Unicode. 4. An important addition: It seems the result font isn't always Lucida Sans Unicode. I've tried to make a simple test file, and the result font was Arial Unicode MS! I have no idea what caused the difference. I can provide a test case and screenshots if needed. Searching the Issue Tracker has come up with other issues that seem to be duplicates of this one: Issue 20281, Issue 62329, Issue 71198, Issue 71649. In this last case, the issue seems to have been recently fixed? (I'm new to this and find following the conversation a bit hard.) I think this is really important for getting people to appreciate the value of OOo. How can I convince someone to switch if they can't see properly in their MS Powerpoint the presentation I gave them?
I suppose that this is the problem with any text containing none-ISO-8859-1 character set characters. At least any presentation containing Latvian, Greek or Cyrillic letters are damaged. (See attached picture).

So are you working on it? I have to make a presentation in PowerPoint but I can't have it in any other font than Lucida Sans Unicode...
So is anyone actually working on this ? When serious bugs like this need years to get resolved, I really wonder how can we persuade people use opensource software...
Interestingly enough importing an openoffice ppt file in google docs and saving it again in powerpoint format displays the non-ISO-8859-1 characters correctly.
