Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 64719
Users need to be aware of print driver and format page setting mismatches
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:40:53 UTC
Reproduced by: Set Format -> Page Paper size set to Legal/A4 File -> Print... -> Properties In the print driver set the paper size to something smaller than Legal/A4 OK (Print) Result: Printer tells you incorrect paper size. OOo doesnt tell you what when wrong. Hours fiddling around trying to find out why it didnt print. It seems like OOo just reverts to the Format, Page... settings, ignoring system defaults etc. Minimally feedback needs to be given of a page size mismatch when settings on the printer driver do not matach those set in the file itself. Would be a bonus if OOo warns you of the problem and asks you if you want it automatically corrected, ie the file is reformated according to the new print driver settings.
@ hi: Please take over.
Confirming behavior with 2.2m on WinXP - no indication is provided when printer does not support choosen paper format. Competing product displays warning "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?". We probably could too.
Do you have enabled the warnings in Tool > Options > OOo > Print?
So this is another case of bad installation defaults. And the message user gets - "The page size has been modified. Should the new settings be saved in the active document?" is confusing as hell to him/her. regina, do you think that enabling those printer warnings as installation default and rewording warning message would create better user experience? If yes I will change summary and type of this issue. WBR, Kirill.
I'm a user, and I think it would help a lot. I would also suggest putting some sort of caution note for users not to fiddle with those settings. eg: Printer warnings (advanced) ---------------------------------------------------- or [] Papers size (enabled recommended) [] Transparency (enabled recommended) [] Paper orientation (enabled recommended)
I really don't know, because the printers are very different and I do not know enough about the way OOo communicates with the printer. A user might have got a printer, which doesn't has own settings for "page size", but are only able to distinguish between trays. I also don't know, whether all printers will provide an information concerning there actual paper size to OOo. Therefore using the settings as default might lead to confusing situations too.
In summary we have no defect here. Works as designed. Reassigned to requirements and Issue type changed to enhancement. Currently OOo will warn only when margin settings are out of print range
In some cases, OOo not warns if margin settings are out of print range. If the document has been prepared on a different computer, its margins may be invalid for my printer. When OOo opening this document, it not warns about margin settings. When the printing is also no message either from OOo or from printer. At result, some page area does'nt print. No warning, for OOo all Okay, but some information is not available in printout!
Created attachment 53224 [details] document with zero margins
@ regina is this issue affected by the CWS printerpullpages?
Yes, this issue is affected by CWS printerpullpages, but it is not solved there. The dialog in printerpullpages shows a preview of the printing, so the user can see, what OOo is going to print. But there is still no direct information, which paper size is set in the printer, you have always to look into the printer properties to get the paper size.
