I have an external usb thumb drive. I began using Open Office yesterday. I set
up autosave for 3 minutes, later changed to 6 minutes for test purposes. Now,
every 6 minutes, the the Windows window indicating that an external device has
been attached opens, even when Open Office is closed.

This is a bug in the windows own file-dialog.

Either use OOo's own dialogs or close OOo completely (including the
quickstarter) or save a dummy doc to another directory.
