Description sherter 2006-10-24 17:45:11 UTC
An RTF document generated in Microsoft Word 2003 with a table in it will lose
the formatting on the last line of text in the cell from the second body row
to the end of the table in the last column. If you have four columns then the
fourth column from the second body row to the end of the table will lose the
formatting. If you have no header it will be the second row to the end. If
you have one header row then the third row to the bottom will lose the
formatting. This also happens if you have bullet points in the table cell.

The work around (not very good and client doesn't want to implement it) is to
put an extra paragraph mark (carriage return/line feed) at the end of the text
for the cell. This will cause the bullet point/formatting to remain.

Importing the .DOC file works correctly so it appears to be a problem in the
RTF import filter. I will attach a zip file containing two .DOC and two .RTF
files. One will have a table with one header row and three body rows with
four columns. All text is centered. The second will have four rows with no
header row and four columns. All text is centered in the table cells.

MRU->HBRINKM: see attached RTF sample. In some cells the paragraph alignment
will not be imported correctly.

I tested this with 2.1 and it is still a problem. I changed the version to 2.1
from 2.0.2.

I was able to successfully replicate the problem using the files you provided on
my Windows XP SP2 machine. I have Open Office 2.1 and MS Office 2007 installed.

However here are a few points that I found interesting while I was doing the
testing. I won't call them a way around since the result is not the same on all
files

1. Open table1.rtf in both MS Word and OpenOffice and notice the difference in
the formatting of the cells in the 2nd and 3rd rows of the last column. Also
notice the size of the file (it should be around 15 KB).

2. Now open the file in MS Word. Go to the cells whose formatting was disturbed.
Change their alignment from Center to left and then to center back again. Save
it now.

3. Open this file in OpenOffice. It should appear fine now. Now notice the size
of the file (it should be around 40KB now. about 2.5 times the size of the
original one).

The reason why I won't call this a way around is that doing the same procedure
on different rtf files yields different results e.g. with table2.rtf doing the
samething makes the left column appear left indented instead of center in
openoffice.

Even the highlighting done cells in MS Word doesn't appear in OpenOffice.
However Bold, Italic and Underlining do

I am attaching the copy of table1.rtf with steps 1 - 3 done. It has some text
highlighting done and the fonts are set to bold.

Is this expected to be fixed in 2.3?
