Description raindrops 2006-10-31 09:46:19 UTC
Open a large document several times and wait. Observe the total page count at
the status line. The writer keeps changing the total page counrt for a long
time. Finally, when the number SEEMS stabilized, you will see that the page
count is different each time, although the document is never modified!

This creates huge problems in shared documents: You cannot talk about page
numbers, as the page numbers can change by up to 6!

The problem is also there when a pdf file is created out of the odt file: If a
feedback comes based on the pdf file, when you open the original odt file, you
will not understand what's the discussion about: The text would have jumped to
another page.

Quite a frustrating experience.

Desired:
1. Temporal consistency: The algorithm must produce identical formatting even if
the document is opened several times and closed without editing anything.

2. User/PC-level consistency: If the same shared document is opened by several
users in different machines, its layout on EACH page must be EXACTLY identical,
as if they are looking at the same document.

3. Indicate when the algorithm has stopped shifting the text around.

An example is a red LED in the status bar, which turns to green when the
formatting is over.

This issue is split from Issue 70268.
Assigned to OD as pre-arranged!
Comment 2 kpalagin 2006-10-31 17:39:50 UTC
raindrops,
any chance we can see document, that exhibits this behavior?
Comment 3 raindrops 2006-11-01 05:10:40 UTC
@kpalagin:
Certainly! OD has the latest version (he also has an earlier version). The major
difference between these versions is that in the latest version, I have reset
the "Keep with the next paragraph" property for ALL the paragraphs. Please take
what you want.

(Actually I did NOT intend to have that "Keep with the next paragraph" property
in the earlier version; but somehow it crept in. Probably during conversion from
the original doc file.)

Private document: Please do not post it publicly!

Investigation by raindrops and OD reveals that the layout algorithm doesn't work
stable with the provided document:
- loading without any further action will cause a layout loop.
- navigating through the loaded document using the navigator and choosing the
heading may avoid the layout loop
- loading and perform complete page formatting (menu Tools - Update - Page
Formatting) also cause a layout loop.

Thus, first of all the layout loop has to be fixed.

according to release status meeting -> 3.x

I just wanted to say that this bug should be increased in priority.

If a word processor doesn't have the same layout from one second to the next, it
is pretty broken! Sometimes it makes my book 302 pages, sometimes 320 pages. It
inserts empty pages, etc., etc.

If someone needs more information, I'm happy to provide it.

OD->keithcu:
It would be good, if You submit a new issue for Your problem and attach the
document.
I am asking for this, because Your problem could be caused by another defect in
the layout algorithm. If it reveals that it is the same, then Your issue can be
closed as a duplicate.
I can also have a look at Your document. Probably, a small change to the layout
properties in Your document will avoid Your problem. Then, You would have a
workaround until Your problem is fixed.
Thx in advance for Your help.
