It is not possible to define the chart background (« chart wall ») for Pie and
Donut charts.

In the format menu the entry chart wall is disabled, but you get "chart wall"
via "object properties". In the old chart you get "chart area" automatically. If
you copy the chart as GDI-Object, you see that a "chart wall" doesn't exist.
Therefore I think, that the error is not, that the color cannot be set, but that
the object properties show the "chart wall" dialog.

Fixed in CWS chart2mst3.
The menu entry "object properties" now is disabled for selected diagrams, when
no wall properties are supported as for pie, donut or net charts.

I confirm this problem with OOo 2.3 m213.

This issue is fixed as described above and as is written in the summary:
Object Properties for wall and floor in pie and donut charts are disabled.
->set back to fixed
The different feature request to get something like a floor for 3D pies is
targeted already with issue 71615. Please don't mix this.
