Description jansekal 2006-12-31 23:45:00 UTC
How to reproduce this bug:
1. Open the attached file "Protocol OOo handles it 50 times slower than
Microsoft office.doc"
Doing so takes the computer quite a long time (approx. 2 minutes, although
Microsoft office opens it in approx 2 seconds) and leads to increase of RAM
consumption by approx. 600 MB (be careful to have your virtual memory/swap large
enough!!!!! - I use 1GB swap for these purposes)

This bug could have something in common with bug

Comment 1 jansekal 2007-01-01 00:05:00 UTC
sorry, the attachment has to be smaller than 1 MB but that of mine is 23,6 MB,
so I have to send it by email to the assigned developer

I was discussing this issue with Mathias Bauer (Mathias.Bauer@Sun.COM), and sent
a similar document (20 MB) to him. It was approx 3 months ago and since that no
one made and issue in issuezilla, so I am doing it now (I will probably need a
special exception for my 24 MB large .doc file :-)

I should also supply following information:
the bug is platform and disk format independent (under Windows 2000 pro SP 4 you
get the same result as under opensuse 10.2 final) (it does not matter if my disk
is ext3, vfat or NTFS)

Or should I supply the document split into 24 pieces?

Yes, first 5 pages, which are 1 MB could be enough to track the bug down, but
with this full sized document, the contrast between approach of OOo and
Microsoft office is clearly seen - OOo loads I do not know what into RAM and it
takes a lot of time and CPU performance, while Microsoft office opens the
document in a second time scale (approx. 2 seconds) and RAM consumption
increases hardly noticeably

As I am not allowed to attach the .doc file, I attach a screenshot documenting
the extreme hardware requirements.

jansekal,
please post file at www.mytempdir.com (they allow files upto 50MB), protecting
it with the password, if neccessary, and providing link and password here.

Confirming with OO 2.1 on WinXP - Writer allocates 620MB of RAM, while Word
takes just 120MB. This is the cause for Writer to be slow.
Changing summary to reflect this.
Comment 11 jansekal 2007-01-03 13:24:19 UTC
by the way, I have observed this strange behaviour also in version 2.0.2, 2.0.3,
2.0.4 (in 2.0.1 probably as well, but i am not sure about it)

MRU->SJ: there are about 100 more or less large pictures in the document. Do you
think hat here is some space for optimizing the resource consumption of OO when
importing graphics?
Comment 13 jansekal 2007-01-04 21:22:02 UTC
to mru:
sorry, I am a poor user, i do not undestand - you think the pictures should be
of lower quality?

Dear developers,
any progress with this issue?

Thanks for your attention.
