Description oblong 2007-02-25 22:04:17 UTC
The mailing lists are receiving many questions each day of the form, "Is OOo
compatible with Vista?" I know that the system requirements at
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html mention Vista.
However, I think it would be beneficial to add Vista suitability on the home
page, or at least add it to the "button" for "Windows" that appears after
clicking "Download OpenOffice.org" on
http://download.openoffice.org/2.1.0/index.html

Preferably in big red flashing letters :-D

This is wasting a lot of bandwidth and time on the users list
Comment 2 kpalagin 2007-02-27 04:43:56 UTC
Yes, please do this ASAP.
Comment 3 oblong 2007-03-04 06:14:23 UTC
Perhaps an increase in the priority rating is needed? Still plenty of questions
about this on the user's list.
Comment 4 oblong 2007-03-29 23:22:12 UTC
Perhaps now that 2.2 is out, and the download link now says, "Windows All
versions (>98)", this could be closed?
(Although shouldn't that really say ">= 98"?)
Comment 5 emo_ 2007-04-10 11:09:03 UTC
There is still a fair amount of traffic on the users list regarding Vista
compatability.
It seems '>98' is rather ambiguous to some users and I can see why. Maybe a
mention of all Windows versions (W98,Me,2000,XP and Vista) or if this would
spoil the aesthetics of the site then 'All Versions (W98 to Vista)' or
something similar.

Comment 6 oblong 2007-10-19 03:12:47 UTC
Even now (October 2007), there are still daily questions about whether OOo is
Vista compatible. Obviously people don't know what ">98" means, so perhaps
something could be changed.
Comment 7 noop 2007-10-19 03:46:26 UTC
Still an issue: ">98" means 'greater than', it does not mean equal to or greater
than.

http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html
shows:

<quote>
Microsoft Windows

    * Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher), Windows
XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista (enhanced Vista integration from version 2.2)
</quote>

This would imply that Windows 98 *is* supported. Further, "Windows Vista
(enhanced Vista integration from version 2.2)" is confusing to new users. Does
this mean; I need 'enhanced' Vista and version 2.2?, which versions of Windows
Vista are supported?, etc.

*Please* fix these simple pages
(http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.0/index.html?focus=download and
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html) so that new users
don't keep asking if OOo can be installed on Win 98 and Vista Home vs Vista xyz.

For the sake of brevity (i.e., we don't want to see a long list of compatible
win flavors) and of clarity (rather than correcting >98 to >=98) ... I propose:

Windows
all versions except 3 and 95

PS: Does anyone on the planet run 3 anymore?
Comment 9 mhenriday 2007-10-22 14:21:02 UTC
One can never count on users reading download or other information with care,
but like the proposer, I do think more attention to prominently posting the fact
that OOo *is* compatible with Microsoft Vista would result in fewer queries to
the user fora on this particular - and very topical - issue....
