Description stp 2007-03-26 21:15:53 UTC
The MSI installer for Windows should give the user an option to create shortcut
icons for Writer, Calc, Draw, Impress and maybe Base, Math on the Desktop and in
quicklaunch toolbar.

It is standard procedure on Windows.

Default setting is debatable.

It allows easy access for the user AND it's all about buying real estate and
creating presence and visibility. This will create more "oh, you use OpenOffice,
too!" aha moments when OOo users do presentations, shares screenshots, lends out
their pc etc.

Fortunatly this is not standard to create links on the desktop and quicklaunch
bar on windows. At least it is bad practice to do this without request.

of: I came here to file an issue after seeing yet another request for help by a
new user who couldn't find an "icon" for OOo on the desktop after installation.
It may not be standard practice to create links on the desktop in other
operating systems, but it is standard practice to create shortcuts in Windows,
and many users expect it. I frequently install new programs, and OOo is the only
one I can recall which does not at least offer to create shortcuts on the
desktop and Quick Launch bar. The installation does create an installation files
folder on the desktop. Sometimes new users think this is the shortcut to start
the program and come to one of the OOo forums to ask why they can't start OOo
using the "shortcut". Others try to create a shortcut by dragging soffice.exe to
the desktop and then come to the forums to complain when OOo won't start.

I think it would be better to create the shortcuts during installation. They can
simply be deleted if unwanted. Not creating them causes problems for users who
expect them to be there and don't know how to create them.

We should think about this. Since NSIS extracts it's files to desktop we should
have a starting link on the desktop too. Maybe to the new start up wizard.

I see that this issue has come up again today on the OpenOffice.org forum. I
still had all my votes left for the installation component so I've added 2 votes
for this issue.

Half of this issue is resolved through issue 86640 in DEV300_m9. It creates the
desktop icon by default on Windows. Should (1) this issue be resolved and
create a new one for quick launch or (2) this issue title be changed just to
quick launch?

I don't really care about quick launch.

Closing as fixed.
