Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 75826
Improvement of tag structure when exporting a document as pdf
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:20:06 UTC
When a Impress (and other OOo) document is exported as pdf, a tag structure can be created for better accessibility of the produced document. An examination of the produced pdf shows that especially an export from Impress has a really bad tag structure. For example there are no separated tags for each slide, enclosing the content of the slides. Every shape seems to be on the same hierachic level. This is really problematic for exported tables. The pdf-format includes a tag for tables. A pdf document generated with powerpoint 2007 is rather well tagged, because it includes slide-tags for each separate slide. Tables are also tagged as tables, allowing clear distinction between table rows and table fields. This issue should have high priority, because of the section 508 in the U.S. as well as other accessibility laws and standards.

pl->sj: more tags for draw/impress PDF export ?
No, not *more* tags, better structured tags! I've included two documents with similar content. One created with PowerPoint 2007 and one created with Impress. Both then exported to pdf. Just open the documents with Acrobat (not Acrobat Reader) and compare the tag structure. The one created with PP is much better structured, for example a slide-tag (for each slide), containing all the content of one slide. The table is tagged as <table>, not as <figure>, that is what Impress does. The PD-Format offers many different types of tags to structure a document. This is essential for the accessibility of a pdf document.

Just some more information on this issue... For an overview of the tags available in pdf: http://www.adobe.com/enterprise/accessibility/pdfs/acro7_pg_ue.pdf Another issue is the inavailability of an alt-text for images in Impress. alt-texts are essential for the accesibility and supported in Writer, but not in Impress. So alt-text should be available for drawings, too. And the alt-text should be exported to the pdf-version of the presentation. This might be another issue, but is also important for better pdf export. The last thing that comes to my mind is that the heading of each slide should/could be used for bookmarks. This is essential to the accessibility of a pdf document. With these enhancements the pdf export of OOo could be near to full accessible!? I'm available for testing purpose, if needed.
I do not have enough time to fix this issue for OOo2.3, so I change the target to OOo2.4
I am sorry, I have to retarget this issue again.
