Description p9w.vu.31122010 2007-04-10 03:36:39 UTC
When opening an OOo-Document the entire application freezes for about 1 minute
if the printer specified in the CUPS printer settings (/etc/cups/client.conf) is
unreachable.

Workaround: comment out the printer in the client.conf or disable networking
when you know that your printer is unreachable *before* you start soffice.

Why is it necessary to check for printers when opening documents?

Duplicate of issue 34140? (To answer your question, I think in some cases
OpenOffice.org checks the printer for the page metrics.)
