The newsflash transition is not supported by Impress. It is converted to the
"plus shape"

file has been created from PPT 2007, saved as a binary PPT97. Reopening the
binary in PPT2007 show it as expected.

OpenXML support will likely have a similar issue.

@cl: ppt import will need to be tweaked (currently, converting to
smil:type="fourBoxWipe" smil:subtype="cornersOut")

And of course, the slideshow will need the new effect implemented. But Shane's
GSoC project might well lay the foundations for this...
