Description drewjensen.inbox 2007-05-04 01:46:54 UTC
The current installer allows users to install the Base module only. This has
caused confusion with a number of users. A number of them have posted inquires
on the OOoforum board.

The user wanted a fully functioning desktop database, but without Writer also
being installed they are not able to create forms or reports.

The installer should be enhanced to do one of the following:

A) Not allow a Base only installation.
B) If a Base only install is selected inform the user that features will not be
available.
C)Install the needed files to support forms and reports.

IMO 'C' is the best solution, but only if this can be accomplished with a full
installation of Writer, otherwise 'B' would seem to be the best solution.

The last line in the initial post should have read:

installation of Writer, otherwise 'B' would seem to be the best solution.

FYI - there continues to be a small but steady number of people that come to the
web forums looking for help because they can not create forms - only to find
that they have installed Base but not Writer.

The question is - how many do this but do no ask for help, rather just assume
the package is brain dead and remove it?

The next question of course is - What is the use case for someone that would
want Base but not want the ability to create forms and reports?

I would imagine there would not be much call for a relational database where
one could not create both forms and reports. Otherwise you would just use a
spreadsheet.
