Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 77322
Copy & Paste from website crashes OOo Writer 2.2
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:44:00 UTC
OOo version: 2.2 (built from OOo_2.2.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz) build=680m14(Build:9134) OS: Ubuntu Linux (see below for versions) Repeatable: Yes Copy & paste from website into Writer causes Writer to crash: Go to via SeaMonkey 1.1.1 (or 1.1.2) or Firefox 2.0.0.3: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing Select: ==== CD Distribution Materials [thru] Artwork for Ubuntu stickers ==== Copy using Ctrl-C Now Paste into a clean, newly opened OOo 2.2 Writer doc using Shift-Insert or from the OOo menu Edit|Paste. Writer crashes - every time. Crash reports were submitted via the OOo/Sun crash report system. Crash report ID's are: rkrcgc and rxrcgc (last one is for StarOffice8/update 6). In order to determine if the problem also happens in the Ubuntu specfic 2.2 distro and/or StarOffice 8 I tested on the following: Linux OS OOo Version CPU/Mem Status ===================================================================== Unbuntu 7.04 2.6.20-15-386 OOo 2.2 450Mhz/256MB Crash Unbuntu 7.04 2.6.20-15-386 StarOffice8/6 450Mhz/256MB Crash Unbuntu 7.04 2.6.20-15-386 2.2.0-1ubuntu3 650Mhz/256MB NoCrash Unbuntu 7.04 2.6.20-15-386 StarOffice8/6 650Mhz/256MB Crash Unbuntu 6.061 2.6.15-28-386 OOo 2.2 2.2Gb/512MB Crash Unbuntu 7.04 2.6.15-386 2.2.0-1ubuntu3 300Mhz/256MB NoCrash Knoppix 5.1.1 2.1 450Mhz/256 NoCrash Note: StarOffice8/6 means that SO8 has the latest version 6 update, so it's fully up to date as well. The above shows that the same action does not crash Writer when using the Ubuntu specific 2.2 version (2.2.0-1ubuntu3) or the Knoppix version, but does crash every time using the OOo 2.2 version. Also, when I asked other users on the OOo OpenOffice.Questions mailing list to test, those with Mandriva installations experienced no problems. Therefore I suspect that perhaps there may be an issue with the way I've installed OOo 2.2 (non Ubuntu'ized version) on Ubuntu. Following are the steps that I take to install: 1. Download OOo_2.2.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz 2. tar xvzf OOo_2.2.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz 3. rename the resulting directory to 'OOo22' for ease of use 4. cd OOo22/RPMS 5. su to root (other times I've also used sudo instead, but found su to work better) 6. remove all instances of Ubuntu OpenOffice 2.2 via Synaptic or apt-get remove 7. issue command: alien -cvk *.rpm 8. upon completion of conversion to .deb files I then issue command: dpkg -i *.deb 9. cd to OOo22/RPMS/desktop-integration & remove all except debian-menus file 10. issue command: dpkp -i *.deb 11. open OOo Writer & complete the program license & registration process. 12. use OOo as normal. Is there perhaps something incorrect about the way that I am installing OOo that is contributing to the crash?

Any progress on this? Confirmation can easily be done by performing the cut & paste as described in the original report.
This issues doesn't affect OOo2.2 680m14(Build:9134) on Solaris x86
Works fine with vanilla build 2.2.1RC3. Seems like bug in ooo-build's Gnome VFS related patches. Occures only for data copied via https.
Closing as per Rail's explanation in "desc6".
"desc6": <quote> Works fine with vanilla build 2.2.1RC3. Seems like bug in ooo-build's Gnome VFS related patches. Occures only for data copied via https. </quote> 1. 2.2.1RC3 is not released. 2. The problem *does* occur in the released version of 2.2., and as per the above *does* still occur via https including in 2.2.1RC3. 3. The problem *does* occur in 2.2.1RC2 (I just tested). Is this the common practice for resolving OOo bug reports? Close simply by testing a yet to be released RC without *any* description as to what or how it has been "tested""? The problem *is* still valid. It can be reproduced in 2.2, 2.2.1RC2 and apparently also with RC3.
noop, 1. RC3 _is_ released - see http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html. 2. I can not reproduce the problem on Mandriva 2007 with OO2.2 3. I will leave the issue open for somebody with Ubuntu to confirm.
Thanks. I have just now tested in 2.2.1RC3 and experience the same problem. Is there a crash report function that I can enable to capture what is happening? One note: I installed 2.2.1RC3 over 2.2.1RC2, would you like me to entirely uninstall OOo and retry? Also, as a reminder; I do not have any Ubuntu versions of OOo (U)OOo installed or any left over symlinks from (U)OOo.
@noop: - crash report: you've already attached a report (which is unfortunatly not a great help as text file...) so I suppose you see the crash report tool..?? Just send the report from the tool and please enter your e-mail address (you may choose for privacy reasons to write a non existing but valid address, it's just for us to find your report in the database! :) So we need to know this address). - reinstall: yes please, try it! - As it only happens copy/pasting: a) try to find out what in the page causes the crash (modify your selection) b) deactivate as many tools running in the background as you can (I'm thinking about clipboard tools, for instance).
Additional crash reports submitted: 1. r92fxc This is with 2.2.1RC3 plus with previous galleries, old configs, and some left over Ubuntu OOo directory folders still on the system. 2. rkh6xc System cleaned of *all* OOo (Ubuntu and OpenOffice), including directories, old configs, galleries, fonts, etc. Then reinstalled 2.2.1RC3. Crash still occurs. 3. rcr6xc Same as 2 above, however instead of copying all in the original, the only section of the page that was copied & pasted was: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing ==== Dapper parties leaflets Translated from French [WWW] http://pierre.slamich.googlepages.com/affiche_dapper_install.svg ==== It appears that copying any section with a URL in it causes the crash. I also tried other similar from the page w/URL's and each time Writer crashed. I suspect it is linked to copying from a https vs http page; if I copy from http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=iopenoffice&btnG=Google+Search and paste into Writer all is fine. If I copy from: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/108221 for instance, Writer crashes - every time.
Confirming with Ubuntu 7.04 i386, Openoffice.org 2.2.0 (official) - as described.
Is it worth trying 2.2.3? I'm happy to install 2.2.3 and do so if perhaps there might be something in 2.2.3 that may fix the issue.
Correction: 2.3.0 In any event it crashes in OOo-dev2.3.0 as well. Bug report was submitted.
Still crashing in OOo-Dev 2.3 Developer Snapshot (build SRC680_m223)
Changed to 2.3 Same results in latest released 2.3 (linux). In fact, copying all of this bug report webpage and pasting into 2.3 Writer crashes Writer. Most recent Sun crash report is: rybm3n
@AMA: could you find something looking at the crash report? I still cannot reproduce it.
I confirm, same problem for me. Running OOo 2.3 (official version from OOo web site) under Ubuntu Dapper (6.06). I noticed that the problem comes from the pic representing the little earth planet. Its url is : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/htdocs/ubuntu/img/u-www.png and OOo crashes after displaying the frame holder for the pic. But it can't reach the target. If I save the page with the Firefox Scrapbook extension, no problem. What's the difference with Mandriva ??? A firewall default configuration setting perhaps ? NB: nothing returned when OOo launched from a

We reproduced this issue on developer machine and will take care of it.

Given the hight number of issue with target 3.0 we still have I think it is justified to move the target for this issue to 3.1.
I have just tested using my original: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing Select: ==== CD Distribution Materials [thru] Artwork for Ubuntu stickers ==== on M22: [Version] AllLanguages=en-US buildid=300m22(Build:9321) ExtensionUpdateURL=http://updateext.services.openoffice.org/ProductUpdateService/check.Update OOOBaseVersion=3.0 ProductBuildid=9321 ProductMajor=300 ProductMinor=22 ProductPatch= ProductSource=DEV300 UpdateID=OOo-dev_3_en-US UpdateURL=http://update30.services.openoffice.org/ProductUpdateService/check.Update?pkgfmt=deb UpdateUserAgent=OOo-dev 3.0 (300m22(Build:9321); $_OS; $_ARCH; BundledLanguages=en-US) And this no longer crashes OOo. I also tested using the Windows M22 version and it also did not crash OOo. Can someone else please verify & if so this bug can probably be marked as resolved & closed.
move target to 3.2.
Reassign what to 3.2? This issue is *resolved and fixed* per my ------- Additional comments from noop Tue Jul 1 23:39:12 +0000 2008 ------- post. Please close this bug. I would do it myself, but find no option for the original issue reporter to close their own bug.
Please close this issue, it has been RESOLVED. NoOp.
