Description dudson 2007-08-14 11:19:27 UTC
page numbering stays thesame, even when you go to the next page, if you're
almost halfway page 2 (and page 2 takes in the most of your screen), it still
says page 1 / x , and it changes when the previous page isn't visible anymore.

That's much to late, it better changes when a page takes more than the half of
the space on the screen.(mostly visible).

I've already experienced a lot of inconvenience when working with someone else
and saying the pages of corrections that I wanted to do, so that the other dude
can make corrections.
I kept saying the wrong page over and over again.

Everyone can duplicate this by:
- making a new text document in OpenOffice Writer and making 2 or more pages.
- then going to the first page
- going slowly down until you're on the next page

Hi,

I have successfully replicated the bug in the following working environment and configuration:

Operating system : Windows 8
System Type : 64 bit Operating System
Open Office Version : 4.0.1

I replicated the bug in the following manner :

1. Created an openoffice writer with extension .odt.
2. Inserted 2 blank pages.
3. Went to the first page
4. Going slowly down
5. While I was seeing the first page and i was in more than half of the next page(page 2), it was saying that i was in page 1/2. In fact, i already was in page 2/2

This wrong reference of pages can generates a problem when we are working in a team group cause we use it frequently.

Since somebody else has been able to duplicate this issue can it's status be changed to confirmed?

BUG 80672 – Paging number stays the same when you move to the next page

Me and Audra reviewed this bug.

Operating System = Windows 7

Open Office Version = Open Office.org 3.3

I was not able to replicate the bug via the following steps and screenshots attached. Perhaps this bug is intermitten and does not occur each time re-tried.

Would you be able to provide screenshots of your steps so I can see the bug? Thanks for your input.

1) Create a Writer document with ‘Page numbering stays the same’ in the 1st, middle and last row of all three Pages (1,2 & 3) -> save with the following extension .odt -> select the x in the upper corner to close the document
2) Open the saved document and make the document full size
3) Open the saved document and make the document less than full size for the 2nd attempt
4) Arrow down to bottom of page -> bottom left corner displays Page 1/3
5) Arrow down to 1st line of page 2 -> left corner displays Page = 2/3
6) Page down to 1st line of page 3 -> left corner displays Page = 3/3
Comment 9 dudson 2014-03-03 11:29:31 UTC
Move the horizontal bar with the mouse to notice it better.
The problem is that when moving from one page to another the numbering tends to stay the same. Even if most of the space on the screen is from the new page.

You must move from a page to another one to notice the bug.

I can reproduce this bug using AOO 4.0.1 on Windows 7.

MY STEPS
I used a 6 page document of lorem ipsum text. (see attached)

I worked in Page Layout View (View-->Page Layout)

Using the vertical scroll bar to the right of the document, I scrolled from the beginning of the document to the end. As I did, the page number did not increase until the top edge of a page reached the top of the document window. For example, the lower left corner page count did not indicate I changed to page 4 until the top edge of page 4 reached the top of the document window.

When scrolling from the end of the document to the beginning, the page number decreased as soon as the bottom edge of the previous page started to come into view in the document window. For example, the page count indicated I was on page 3 of 6 when the bottom edge of page 3 appeared at the top of the document window.

It appears that page numbers change based not on proportion of displayed page but as the interaction between the direction of scrolling and page edges. When scrolling from beginning to end of a document, the page numbers seem to change too slowly. When scrolling from the end of a document to the beginning, they seem to change to soon.

No matter which direction I was scrolling or how much of a page was displayed, placing the cursor within the text provided the proper indication of page number in the lower left corner.

Dudson suggested using the horizontal scroll bar. Doing so did not appear to have any effect on page numbering for me.

I also tried this with a two-page blank document. Page numbers changed as described in the blank document, too.

I meant use the vertical scroll bar, not the horizontal one.

Screenshot highlighting misleading page numbering

This is a screenshot of the misleading page numbering.
Gotten by opening the lorem ipsum text, holding the mouse on the vertical scrollbar and moving to the next page.
OpenOffice writer says you are still on page 1 while almost the whole screen is taken in by page 2. This causes confusion.

Steps to reproduce misleading page numbering

Document containing the steps to replicate the misleading page numbering.
In the document the steps are illustrated with screenshots.
There are 3 steps, the last step has two screenshots. One in lower resolution to easier see the misleading page numbering in the screenshot.

SharPorz I have added a document illustrating steps to reproduce misleading page numbering.

Your confusion stems from a small misunderstanding.
It's not going to the next page, as I mistakenly said in my first comment.
You have to get the screen to show most of the next page.
Since the screen shows almost all of the next page, you tend to think the program will show that page number. But this does not happen. It is only after you move to having the screen display only the next page that the page numbering changes.

The improvement would be that the program would change when more half of the screen is displayed by the new page. Or maybe show two numbers when more than a quarter of each page is visible.

Could somebody ask SharPorz to take a new look at this issue, plz?
Think I solved the reproduvibility issue.

BTW Word 2010 shows "Page: 2 of 2" in status bar only when page 1 is completely out of sight.
Comment 21 dudson 2014-05-14 16:02:59 UTC
Also it"s important the fix has symmetric behaviour from going form a page to the next page or going from a page to the previous page.
Testing should be done in both directions.
Comment 22 dudson 2014-05-21 12:26:32 UTC
Testing should be done by scrolling in both directions.

The code should be unified for page handling with other applications, including Impress and Draw.
