Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 82894
Incorrect values displayed
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:36:55 UTC
OOo 2.3.0 Calc on Ubuntu 0710 Gutsy Gibbon, Screenshot 1: Column A shows some calculated coefficients. A3:A5 are disp[ayed values from R3:R5 A6 is the 'Paste Special' value of A3 - the same value but not from a referenced cell. Screenshot 2: The width of column A has been reduced. Utterly wrong values are displayed in A4:A5, admittedly with warning flags. This contrasts with the much safer policy displayed in the R column. Screenshot 3: On further narrowing the column, it is apparent that the source of the value is not relevant. In A3 the source is the content of R3. In A6 the value is stored directly. Screenshot 4: After saving the data file for this report, I reloaded it to confirm it shows the problem. After saving and reloading I get this different display, which nicely shows where the erroneous values are coming from. Recommendation: Either 'Optimal Height' should be dynamically applied as values change, or the value should be hashed out if the current cell size cannot accommodate it. If these are not viable short term solutions, showing just the first line rather than the last line of the wrapped answer (with the warning flag) would be a big improvement.

I can reproduce this in openoffice.org-2.3.0-6.11.fc8 Calc on Fedora 8. Moreover, on further reduction of the A column I noticed that calc wasn't showing the last digits of the number but instead it showed digits around the decimal point (see A3 and A6 in the column-a-further-reduced.png screenshot).

I use German OOoDev300_m24 on WinXP. The problems are as described. But issue type is not 'defect', but 'enhancement'. Handling of row height needs improvement.
Technically it is an enhancement. The spreadsheet does not give incorrect answers, it just shows the wrong bit of the correct answer. But the poor user could be forgiven for not really appreciating this subtle difference if (s)he trusts and uses the answer seen ...
reassigning features and enhancements to user requirements@openoffice.org which will be the default owner for those tasks (was introduced some time ago)
