Description sseppala 2007-10-24 13:12:31 UTC
If you save a document in .doc word format that has Index/Table with 2 or more
columns they get mangeled in the process when opening with Microsoft Word. When
opening with Microsoft Word the columns of the Index expand over the page width
and the right most characters in each column are not displayed. Openoffice does
however displays the the columns correctly when opening the .doc document with
Openoffice Writer.

This defect maybe not sound so serious with the "Table of Content" example,
because those usually have only one column. But it also affects the
Alphabethical index just the same, and alphabethical indexes usually have 2 columns.

MRU->HBRINKM: This might be a duplicate of issue 59347. An Index is a sub-type
of sections, so te root cause may be the same.

I looked at the issue 59347 and there was a workaround by unchecking the "Evenly
distribute contents to all columns" option. Unfortunately this option does not
exist in the Index/Table dialogs columns tab. Maybe it could be added there too
as a quick fix until something can be done to issue 59347, which apparently is
not going to be anytime soon.

Ignore my last comment.

I tested this a little bit more and found out that it is the tab-stop position
that is messing Word layout. It seems that Word can't handle it if the tab-stop
position is more than the column width. If I change the tab-stop position to the
column width, then Word displays the columns correctly.

Because of this I think that issue 59347 is not related. I think Issue 59347
just about that Word can't "Evenly distribute contents to all columns".
