Description troy_s 2008-01-06 07:43:26 UTC
Summary: Current bug reporting web interface is completely counter-intuitive,
counter-productive, and probably detrimental to the poor devs. Manifestations
may include but are not limited to:
 * Seasoned geeks are unable to even find the 'proceed' link to register a bug
report, despite having registered several before.
 * Completely unintuitive and hyper-technical for usage. This leaves developers
with:
   1) Under reported bugs due to painful interface by users.
   2) Poorly registered bugs as a result of complex and strange selection boxes.
   3) No redundancy check in bug topics / summaries resulting in duplicate bug
reports and laborious triaging.
   4) Wormy snakelike http path to even get registered to file a bug report.
Predictable net loss for developers as end users will be unable to traverse the
path.
   5) Complete inability for mainstream users to post serious bug reports. This
has been tested on at least two individuals of estimated mainstream abilities.

Frequency: Always (5/5 trials for manifestations)

Reproduction: Attempt to create a user account on OpenOffice.org. Attempt to
register a bug. Attempt to maintain sanity while performing step one and two.

Workarounds / Solutions: Seriously considering a bug tracker migration might
help to not only increase viable bug report but also reduce wasted developer
time. Consider the very real byproduct that a large project such as Inkscape as
experienced over an extremely short period of time having migrated to Launchpad:

Thank you for your intention to save the projects precious developers time and
the project in general.

Correcting summary to less irritating language and to better summarize the
description.

AOO uses Bugzilla and for many reasons that will not be changed.
Improvement of bugzilla can be discussed at <http://www.bugzilla.org/>, here it is not our bug. WIÓNTFIX for now.

Of course it can be discussed to improve the feedback interface, at LibreOffice an extra BZ user interface has been created, and we can think about something similar or a ODF template or whatever. But without a minimum concept nobody will take care.
