Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 85067
OOo crashes repeatedly when opening a document
Last modified: 2008-09-02 13:59:59 UTC
Hi. When opening the document at http://christoph.anton.mitterer.name/thesis/Diplomarbeit.odt Openoffice crashes with an unexpected error,.. after restarting, and when choosing to restore it crashes again,.. and again and again. The document could be opened until OOo 2.3.0 without any errors. Best wishes, Chris.
Which OS do you use? Where do the OOo version come from? We need more information about the structure of your document I can't open the document under the link. If I only choose the directory I see that the *.odt has 60/61 MB and the *.pdf 37 MB Do you insert pictures? Which format? Are this *.jpg? It is not normal thgat the *.odt has a size nearly two times of the *.pdf
I was able to open the document using OO 2.3.1 and 2.4 dev build on Windows XP and SUSE Linux. Chris, did you use the OOo build downloaded from openoffice.org? When did the crash happen - during loading (progress indicator appeared in the status bar) or after it while OO tried to build up the view? Ended OOo up in a hangup or did the crash reporter tool came up?
Ah,.. sorry that I missed to add these informations: I'm using Linux (AMD64) with Debian Sid; exact package version: 1:2.3.1-3 >I can't open the document under the link. Why can't you open the link? Any error messages? >Do you insert pictures? Which format? Are this *.jpg? Yes I have lots of pictures, all are png's (with alpha channel). >It is not normal thgat the *.odt has a size nearly two times of the *.pdf Yes I have a "Version" saved within the odt.
>Chris, did you use the OOo build downloaded from openoffice.org? See above. >When did the crash happen - during loading (progress indicator appeared in >the status bar) or after it while OO tried to build up the view? It loads,.. and I even see the first page shortly, but then it crashes. >Ended OOo up in a hangup or did the crash reporter tool came up? Well there comes an OpenOffice window, saying that an unexpected error occured, and that it will recover the document after restarting.
I've missed one important thing: In http://christoph.anton.mitterer.name/thesis/1._Ausgabe/ there are two quite identical versions of my diploma thesis. - Diplomarbeit.odt - Diplomarbeit (Abgabe-Version).odt The 2nd is based on the first one (i.e. I've copied the first one to another file, and made several modifications). While Diplomarbeit.odt always crashes,... "Diplomarbeit (Abgabe-Version).odt" just loads fine. Both have the same pictures in it. But some difference in the text, and I've removed an index.
Debian provides its own OOo build; please refer to the Debian support. The native builds downloadable from OOo homepage do not show the problem.
Closed.
>>I can't open the document under the link. >Why can't you open the link? Any error messages? ALready the browser hangs when I click the *.odt link.
mru: it very well could be that it's just a amd64 problem. I don't believe closing a bug because it just works with the i386 version is helpful here.... My laptop unfortunately is in repair, but I'll test with Pavels amd64 builds when it's back..
As rene said this should be probably reopened, but I think it's best that he'll do that after he tested the files on his own. btw: When I wrote "While Diplomarbeit.odt always crashes,... "Diplomarbeit (Abgabe-Version).odt" just loads fine." I must have been drunk or so... BOTH files bring openoffice to crash. A friend of mine experiences the sample problem, but he's also using Debian/Sid/AMD64
The 64bit builds are no native builds and not supported by OOo. Please refer to the person/institution who builds/provides these versions.

It seems that it works again with (at least version 2.4), but only if I create a pristine ~/.openoffice.org2.
