Please add a new Linux distro to the list
Last modified: 2009-09-30 10:21:24 UTC
Can one of the page maintainers please action the email below Thanks - John +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ From: Steve Frank <stevenlfrank@optonline.net> Date: Fri, 04 Jan 2008 19:07:06 -0500 To: webmasters@openoffice.org "If you have news of other Linux distributions packaging OpenOffice.org 2.0 and developer snapshots, please let us know." Quoted from.http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html At the bottom of: "Linux RPM-based Installation" section is "If you have news of other Linux distributions packaging OpenOffice.org 2.0 and developer snapshots, please let us know." But no link, so I looked for something under "contact us" and didn't know where to send this. The Yellow Dog Linux distro also includes Open Office 2.0. My copy was v5.0.2 for PS3, IBM Cell & Apple Power PC http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/apps.shtml Can you forward this to the appropriate person/address, please. My suggestion would be to add a link, too. Thanks
Oh boy....after looking at the list I see we're probably missing a LOT of distros which supply OOo. I'm also not sure about this comment and how it relates to what's written on this page. For example, I have an old 2.0 version on my SuSE 10.0 at home which clearly says it's a "Novell" version, but my newer 10.3 at work just seems to be plain vanilla 2.2 but simply included in the opensuse packages. So...whoever changes this perhpas needs some guidance in what this listing is actually supposed to signify. It might be simpler in the long run to just stop after the NOTE paragraph. Keeping up with all Linux distros that supply OOo will be a headache in the long run. My .02
Can I suggest we use a wiki then to keep this up to date? We were thinking of a list of Linux distros, anyway. -louis
hmmmmm...well looking at the wiki main page (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Main_Page) which I STILL can not easily find from the main home page :( what would you suggest? maybe a separate new main item called "We Run on Linux!' or something of that nature? Take a look at the comprehensive linux distro site---distrowatch.com and you'll see why even "listing" Linux distros is somewhat problematic IMO. What WOULD be valuable is to state the underlying requirements that any Linux distro should have to run OOo successfully... C library versions, etc...if such a statement exists or could exist. generally Linux users have come to expect this type of verbiage, I think. The newer "packaging" of OOo for Linux goes a long way I imagine to actually identifying potential pitfalls as well. Bottom line...I will happily change th existing download instructions to completely take out the info on linux distros and dig around a bit to find something that might stand the test of time a bit better. Thoughts?
I think you are right. I think the text should now have three sections: * installing from our RPMs * installing from our DEBs A warning about 'other' versions (SUSE, Ubunutu, etc) I can provide text if required but I don't think I have commit rights to this page John
John and Louis-- I'll take care of this in the next day or so. No problem.
OK, I'm closing this out. Please see Linux revisions on the instruction page.
