Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 85615
Help bugs part 5 (m231, m234, OOH680_m3)
Last modified: 2010-01-06 12:03:09 UTC
This is my latest collection of bugs from the original strings of helpcontent2. I hope they are useful. Previous fixes have definitely improved the quality of the Help strings: thankyou for your efforts in response to my issues. m241-m242 1. Help reference does not match interface helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000001.xhp 0 help hd_id3148620 6 0 en-US Metric 2002-02-02 02:02:02 This refers to the item in the interface, but in the interface, we only have: sc source\ui\src\optdlg.src 0 fixedline RID_SCPAGE_LAYOUT GB_UNIT 115 en-US Metrics Elsewhere in the Help, the string _does_ correspond to the interface: n helpcontent2 source\text\shared\optionen\01060300.xhp 0 help hd_id3155338 24 0 en-US Metrics 2. Missing space helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000002.xhp 0 help par_id3157909 37 0 en-US Frames are useful for designing the layout of\<link href=\"text/shared/00/00000002.xhp#html\" name=\"HTML\"\>HTML\</link\> pages. $[officename] uses floating frames into which you can place objects such as graphics, movie files and sound. The context menu of a frame shows the options for restoring or editing frame contents. Some of these commands are also listed in \<emph\>Edit - Object\</emph\> when the frame is selected. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 - of\<link href=\"text/shared/00/00000002.xhp#html\" name=\"HTML\"\>HTML\</link\> + of \<link href=\"text/shared/00/00000002.xhp#html\" name=\"HTML\"\>HTML\</link\> 3. Incorrect interface reference helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000002.xhp 0 help par_id3149483 74 0 en-US $[officename] creates ImageMaps for both methods. Select the format from the \<emph\>Save as type \</emph\>list in the \<emph\>Save As \</emph\>dialog in the \<emph\>ImageMap Editor\</emph\>. Separate Map Files are created which you must upload to the server. You will need to ask your provider or network administrator which type of ImageMaps are supported by the server and how to access the evaluation program. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 - \<emph\>Save as type \</emph\>list ?? I can't find this text in the interface strings. The closest it gets is "Save as" or specific instances like "Save as image". However, this error also occurs in the Calc guide. What should it say? 4. Incorrect interface reference helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000002.xhp 0 help par_id3149664 77 0 en-US When saving the ImageMap, select the file type \<emph\>SIP - StarView ImageMap\</emph\>. This saves the ImageMap directly in a format which can be applied to every active picture or frame in your document. However, if you just want to use the ImageMap on the current picture or text frame, you do not have to save it in any special format. After defining the regions, simply click \<emph\>Apply\</emph\>. Nothing more is necessary. Client Side ImageMaps saved in \<link href=\"text/shared/00/00000002.xhp#html\" name=\"HTML\"\>HTML\</link\> format are inserted directly into the page in HTML code. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 - file type \<emph\>SIP - StarView ImageMap\</emph\> ?? Again, I can't find this reference in the interface strings. There are several strings containing "StarView", but none of them include "ImageMap". 5. Incorrect formatting? helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000002.xhp 0 help par_id3156360 142 0 en-US \<link href=\"text/shared/00/00000002.xhp#html\" name=\"HTML\"\>HTML\</link\> pages contain certain structural and formatting instructions called tags. Tags are code words enclosed by brackets in the document description language HTML. Many tags contain text or hyperlink references between the opening and closing brackets. For example, titles are marked by the tags <h1> at the beginning and </h1> at the end of the title. Some tags only appear on their own such as <br> for a line break or <img ...> to link a graphic. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 Do we need to escape the HTML sample tags in the Help, so they won't be interpreted as formatting? 6. Irrelevant strings I still question very strongly why this type of string is included as translatable 0 en-US \<image id=\"img_id3153070\" src=\"res/commandimagelist/sc_zoom.png\" width=\"0.222inch\" height=\"0.222inch\"\>\<alt id=\"alt_id3153070\"\>Icon\</alt\>\</image\> 2002-02-02 02:02:02 The vast majority of them only have "Icon" as the translatable string. They make the big files look even larger than they actually are, which deters translators. In one section of 46 strings in helpcontent2/shared/00,po, _26_ were this string, only the untranslatable measurements and address etc. varying. Why have these strings in the translatable file at all? 7. Inaccurate interface reference helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000011.xhp 0 help par_id3154116 0 en-US By default, you see inactive menu items as gray items. To hide the inactive menu items, go to \<emph\>Tools - Options - $[officename] - View\</emph\> and disable the \<emph\>Inactive menu items\</emph\> box. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 "Inactive menu items" does not exist in the interface, nor does "menu items": all I can find is two strings containing only "inactive". What should be written here? It only confuses the user, to send him or her looking for an interface reference which does not exist. 8. Unclear string helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000020.xhp 0 help par_id3152414 3 0 en-US \<switchinline select=\"sys\"\>\<caseinline select=\"UNIX\"\>In UNIX, certain file formats cannot be recognized automatically. \</caseinline\>\<defaultinline\>$[officename] normally recognizes the correct file type automatically on opening a file.\</defaultinline\>\</switchinline\> There may be cases where you have to select the file type yourself in the \<emph\>Open\</emph\> dialog. For example, if you have a database table in text format that you want to open as a database table, you need to specify the file type "Text CSV" after selecting the file. 2002-02- 02 02:02:02 - if you have a database table in text format that you want to open as a database table + if you have a database table in text format that you want to open in database format ? 9. Incorrect interface reference 31 0 en-US By default, \<emph\>content.xml\</emph\> is stored without formatting elements like indentation or line breaks to minimize the time for saving and opening the document. On the \<emph\>Tools - Options - Load/Save - General\</emph\> tab page you can activate the use of indentations and line breaks by clearing the check box \<emph\>Size optimization for XML format (no pretty printing)\</emph\>. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 - Size optimization for XML format (no pretty printing) This whole string does not exist in the interface, only: svx source\options\optsave.src 0 checkbox RID_SFXPAGE_SAVE BTN_NOPRETTYPRINTING 236 en-US Size optimization for XML format 2002-02-02 02:02:02 This error also occurs in: helpcontent2 source\text\shared\optionen\01010200.xhp 0 help hd_id3154920 77 0 en-US Size optimization for XML format (no pretty printing) 2002-02-02 02:02:02 10. Missing interface references In shared/00.po, starting with this string: helpcontent2 source\text\shared\00\00000040.xhp 0 help tit 0 en-US The $[officename] installation is incomplete. 2002-02-02 02:02:02 there are a number of supposed interface strings which do not appear at all in the interface. I do not know where they are. 11. Changed most of the files as requested, in CWS hcshared16. Many thanks for your valuable feedback. Unfortunately, we must keep word count as low as possible to avoid that a whole CWS gets rejected now, close before a release. So I only changed the more severe issues from your list, and will fix the typos later when there is no immediate translation handover date waiting. numbers 1, 2, 3: fixed number 4: the string is there. Insert a bitmap. select it, Edit-ImageMap, click Save, look at the File type listbox. number 5: no problem in Help - it's in the Glossary - Internet terms number 6: all "Icon" strings should be translated. They are alternative text strings for the icons, to be read by screen reader software. number 7: deleted the sentence that starts with "To hide the..." number 8: later number 9: fixed number 10: whole file deleted number 11: the strings with 00000004.xhp#wie inside are OK. They need to be such as you see them in the source - it can be questioned whether they need to be in the translation files. The other strings I tagged as "hlp_aux_embed" which should make them invisible to translation database. number 12: later number 13: the first string is to insert a new object, the second string is to edit the current object. number 14, 15: later number 16: ? this heading is already tagged as localize="false" - don't know why you see it in the database. May be because it's also a meta tag? Don't mind - users will not see it. number 17: later number 18: fixed number 19, 20, 21, 22: later number 23: removed the first word "iterative" number 24: strings are double because they are valid for DRAW and IMPRESS. Might be best to leave them in upper case English and add the translation in parentheses, as you did) number 50: removed the text in parentheses. number 51: added a warning note that not all format codes apply to all languages. number 52, 53: fixed number 54: later number 55: fixed number 56(1): yes, we need both strings. number 56(2): the correct headings are "Horizontally" and "Vertically". number 57: later number 58, 59: fixed number 60: later number 61. 62: fixed number 63, 64: later number 65: fixed number 66 to 68: later number 69: no need for text label, text gets embedded from other file. number 70 to 75: later
Thankyou for putting in the time to investigate all of these, and to fix the ones that can be done now. I am still concerned about untranslatable strings, since the main thing putting people off translating the Help (apart from the messy syntax) is the sheer number of strings. Reducing that number by removing untranslatable strings would help all translaton teams, and result in more and better translations of the Help. So, a few comments... ;) "number 6: all "Icon" strings should be translated. They are alternative text strings for the icons, to be read by screen reader software." I agree that such information is important, but this function is not being used in the Help. Only a very, very few of these "Icon" strings actually have a distinct text: the rest, well over 99% of them, still have the default text "Icon", which is of limited, if any, use to the user of a screen reader. So, if we're going to keep them, could we please make them useful? :) "number 11: the strings with 00000004.xhp#wie inside are OK. They need to be such as you see them in the source - it can be questioned whether they need to be in the translation files. " If they do not require translation, please don't mark them as translatable, for the reasons above. "number 46: pls use translation memory" I wasn't querying having to translate them, simply whether they were deliberate or not. I thought they might be a mistake. ;) Thanks very much for your help (sic) ;) with this: I am working on the next report (version 6). ;)

I'm sorry, where do I find the GSI file for cws hcshared16 ? I usually get my GSI files from Pavel's server: ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/.newserver/ but he doesn't list CWS.
