Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 86043
mdb file: OpenOffice.org Base program disappears
Last modified: 2009-04-12 21:17:01 UTC
This was reported to discuss@openoffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=62169) and I've found the same problem: >> I downloaded OO 2.3.1 and opened up OpenOffice.org Base >> This presents a Database Wizard screen where I can create a new or open >> an existing database. I choose to 'open existing'. Click on "open" >> find .mdb file and click on it. Then click 'open' in that window. >> OpenOffice.org Base program immediately disappears. No error >> indication, no warning, no nothing. No longer shows in Task manager.
I can confirm that this is how the application functions. Also I can add that this is a very common new user error and complaint heard in the user forums. This is not how you open an MDB file however. The question is, I suppose, if there should be some notification to the user that they have attempted to perform an action not supported, or more accurately perhaps, that they have gone about an action in an inappropriate fashion. For instance when the user attempts to open an mdb file directly, or accdb, or dbf it would be beneficial if the application could put up a meaningful error message directing them to use the "Connect to existing database" function instead of the "Open existing database", which refers to exisiting Base files only. Changing the Issue from DEFECT to ENHANCEMENT therefore and setting keyword - usability
i would also await an error message
Accepted.
Fixed in cws dba31a. Now an infobox appears which states to use the other way.
fs-> msc: please verify in CWS dba31a
