Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 88192
Aqua: Opentype font italic variants incorrectly assigned and applied
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:31:14 UTC
On a number of Adobe Opentype fonts, the variants are improperly identified in an erratic manner. For example, Regular may render as Italic. Bold may render as BoldItalic. This behavior was specifically discovered on Leopard 10.5.2. Some examples: Minion Pro Regular renders as Minion Pro Italic. Minion Pro Bold renders correctly. Minion Pro Display renders correctly. Minion Pro Display Bold renders as Bold Italic. Minion Pro Italic renders as Minion Pro Italic with a further false-italic slant. HelveticaNeueLT Std Regular renders as Italic. HelveticaNeueLT Std Bold renders as Bold Italic. Many other examples were noted. I could not identify any consistency, other than a penchant for Italicizing. Only OpenType fonts seem to be effected. However, not all OpenType fonts are effected. Warnock Pro (also Adobe) renders correctly in every case.

Probably related, if not a complete dupe of issue #79878
Yes, most of this problem seems to be a duplicate of issue 79878. The problem with wrong italic attributes of "Minion Pro" and "Helvetica Neue" seems to be specific to the Aqua port though, so I'd like to address that problem in this issue and changed the subject line accordingly.
.
I saw 79878, but dismissed it, since in my testing the error occurred whether the alternate variants were installed or not. I tried removing all variants of Minion Pro except for Regular, Bold, Italic, and BoldItalic. Same behavior.
Setting a target milestone.
Could issue #79634 also be related? It describes an incorrect handling of an Post Script Type1 Font within OOo Beta1 and Beta2.
The problem with slant+pitch of fonts like "Minion Pro","Myriad Pro" and "HelveticaNeue" is described and solved in issue 93778. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 93778 ***
Closing duplicate.
