Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 88607
Support narrow no-breaking space
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:17:56 UTC
Unicode.org defined a separate codepoint for narrow no-breaking space, in addition to the original no-breaking space. Some some languages such as French explicitely distinguish between both in typography: — narrow nobreakspace is used before ;!? — nobreakspace before :» and after « Narrow no-breaking space is slowly gaining acceptance: 1. it can occur in texts pasted in OO.o 2. some platforms explicitely support it at the input level, and users can type it directly in any application, including OO.o Unfortunately OO.o does not seem to know what narrow non-breaking space is: 1. it has no special representation unlike normal non-breaking space in pi-view 2. its autocorrect rules always use full nobreaking space. Please fix
reassign to ama @ama: please comment.
ama->os: To get the gray rectangle in text display is not a big job. But unfortunately a lot of fonts doesn't support this narrow nobreakspace (U+202F, when I'm right?). So I'm not sure if we want to allow the insertion via "Insert/Formatting Mark..." And I do not know what has to be changed in the autocorrection.
It's in DejaVu. DejaVu is shipped with OO.o. Thus you'll always have a glyph fallback if needed

Since issue 66116 has been marked a duplicate "the wrong way", i.e. the older issue a duplicate of the younger, I adjusted the "version" field of this issue. My vote for having a menu item for the NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE (U+202F). This could be done under Insert -> Formatting Properties (maybe even visible when CTL is switched off).
Issue #97248 is related too. However please note they have all different objectives. This issue is not about providing an OO.o menu to enter narrow nobreakspace, it's about having it displayed when the Pi/paragraph button is pressed (and about changing the autocomplete rules to use it when appropriate). I actively do not care about adding input methods to OO.o and adding one should have no incidence on this bug status. The menu thing is bug #66116, a different issue that do not concern OSes with working input layers Issue #97248 is about supporting the whole space unicode block. However the different spaces have different properties and should not be treated as the same.
