This is a classic example of English error called sentence fragment.

Wrong:   "A connection could not be created, because the URL is invalid."
Correct: "A connection could not be created because the URL is invalid."

To get this message the base URL must exist but the wiki not reachable, ex.:

http://www.mediawiki.org/x

instead of:

http://www.mediawiki.org/w

Verifed too!
