While typing in Writer spaces do not appear while typing until you type a
non-space character what entering text towards the right side of the page.  The
problem surfaces once you have typed a line and are about two-thirds across the
page.  

If you press spacebar at the end of a word it does not display until a non-space
character is typed.  If you hit multiple spacebars, they all show up only after
a non-space character is typed.  This only appears to occur on the right side of
the page.  Very odd!

I confirmed this with a few different page sizes: letter, tabloid, A5.
