Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 89351
2.4.0 Font Rendering is Bad
Last modified: 2010-10-17 07:22:10 UTC
Hi, I am using the official OOo 2.4.0 Linux debs from OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu 8.04. Note that I am NOT using the Ubuntu build, but rather the official OOo build. Fonts in OpenOffice look blurry on my system. I have tried to set up font replacement for the "Andale Sans UI" font, and I have tried to disable the "Use system fonts" option in OOo, but nothing makes a difference. It is using my Gnome fonts (DejaVu Sans Book), but something is wrong with the subpixel hinting and it looks awful. Thanks for the help!
I think that the official OOO build does not follow the system-wide setting for font hinting and subpixel rendering. You can get subpixel hints by - using OOo shipped with hardy heron (it is compiled to follow the gnome font settings) - using the official OOo 3.0 beta (because it's a 3.0 feature) (Somebody please, correct me if I'm wrong.)
@ sba: Please have a look.
Hello again, thanks for the comments. Yes, the Ubuntu Hardy build of OOo 2.4.0 looks good, but it has other bigger issues, which is why I am using the official build. Is there any way to make these instructions work? http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/fontguide.html#9 I have tried substituting all sorts of fonts, with no success.
@ sb56637: Is this issue still valid for OOo 3.2?
