Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 89817
Allow empty paragraph in list when Backspace was used
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:22:04 UTC
'Auto-bulleting' works unpractically: you cannot easily leave a line out when creating some list; on pressing 'return' twice (to create empty line in-between), auto-bulleting shuts off, you can't simply continue with further bullets. Instead, you'll have to type one letter, do 'return', write the other text and manually delete the letter and bullet afterwards. Additionally, when putting a first line with '-' in front by myself indicating a 'bulleted' list for the wizard, enter text and hit 'return', auto-bulleting is but being initiated correctly for the next few lines, but not the first one; the first '-' stays fat and bold, like it was set there by me. Remedy: alter auto-bulleting so as to it continues till 'return' occurs a second time; then, when text is entered in the third line, the empty line in-between gets cleared of the bullet, if another 'return' is received, all empty prior bullets are being deleted and auto-bulleting shuts off. Also, please make sure the wizard is exchanging the very first of the '-' placed by the user with a slim 'wizard-style'-one; this doesn't work, if there's a tab set in-between the '-' and the text. typist
That is not fully true. When a bulleted line is created, just press Backspace key - this will remove the bullet from the line so that a non-bulleted paragraph can be entered. Two times enter for leaving bulleted mode is common behavior in WOrd processing.

"'Auto-bulleting' works unpractically: you cannot easily leave a line out when creating some list." -> "That is not fully true. When a bulleted line is created, just press Backspace key - this will remove the bullet from the line so that a non-bulleted paragraph can be entered. Two times enter for leaving bulleted mode is common behavior in WOrd processing." What I mean is, that, when trying to create an empty line between two bulleted paragraphs, it's not possible to do that in a practical manner: if I press Enter after a bulleted paragraph, a new bullet is set (always in the very next line, not leaving an empty line by default -> not problem really a problem, can be removed with backspace). If I press backspace on that bullet, it's being deleted, but I can't simply proceed to the next line and having the bullets automatically continued there, that's the real problem. I then have to manually set a new bullet and engage the wizard newly. Since you'll usually want to have some space between two bulleted paragraphs (I do), that's not very practical. Common behaviour should be, that the wizard automatically starts over again, when a blank line between two bulleted paragraphs has been created. The following behaviour is still true, but the occurence is not consistent (perhaps it's just a matter of standard settings, but if so, I don't know about it): "Additionally, when putting a first line with '-' in front by myself, indicating a 'bulleted' list for the wizard, enter some text and hit 'return', auto-bulleting is but being initiated correctly for the next few lines, but not the first one; the first '-' stays fat and bold, like it was set there by me." Yeah, now I understand. I will reopen and assign issue to improve the behavior.
MRU->OD/FL: I have an Idea for this - there should be an exception when the number/bullet label has been deleted by using backspace key. In this case an empty paragraph should be allowed when Enter is used directly after this and the list should be continued normally then.
BTW: the big competitor handles this case much more illogical. IME we could take a small advantage there ;-)
thank you for addressing this enhancement! :)
