Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 90198
File associations to MS Office not set
Last modified: 2008-06-01 17:27:19 UTC
Installing alongside OOo 2.4 with Microsoft Office file associations set to open in OOo. The 3.0 Beta installer seems to ignore the settings of the screen that asks if you want it to open MS Office documents, and instead (even if you don't check any of the MS Office apps) resets all the file associations to their defaults (so that they won't automatically open in OOo 2.4 either). Once it is in this state (with both versions of OOo installed), changing the options inside either version of OOo to try to fix this (from Tools>Options>Load/Save>Microsoft Office) does not change any associations either.

I did search before reporting it. OK, probably my searching incompetence. But you've missed the point (or I have). The main aspect of my issue seems not to be covered in the issue that this was marked as a duplicate of, or in the actions that were taken on that, and is not in accord with the reason for leaving out the integration in the beta. this is that the beta installer, on this machine, does NOT simply ignore everything and not set up the integration. What it does is to delete the existing associations for .DOC, .PPT, .XLS and so on, and replace them by defaults. (The same happens whether I check the boxes for integrating the MS Office filetypes in the 3.0 installer, or not. It never does the integration, but it always takes away the existing associations.) So the upshot is that I can't just go on working as before for production work with 2.4, because .DOC files and so on do not open automactially in OOo 2.4 any more, they have gone back to the defualt and open in Wordpad (and .PPT and .XLS don't open in anything). I can fix this by repairing the 2.4 installation, of course. But it shouldn't happen. I'd be happy if the 3.0 installer didn't give me the option of associating MS Office filetypes. I'd be reasonably happy if it gaveme the option of not doing so (as it does), and if I say I don't want it to (I did the first time I installed it), it leaves the old associations untouched (but it doesn't). I'm not happy with the installation process taking away, without warning, the associations I previously had, without me having asked it to change any associations.
