If you mark text using CTRL+SHIFT+Right Arrow because you want underline
selected text, Writer underline also the last space behind the last word of the
selected text which is wrong i think. The last space should not be underline
(MS Word do it correctly). See example in attachement.

I checked with "3.0.0 Beta Multilingual version English UI WIN XP: [300m2
(Build9301)]" and can confirm the reported effect; also with "2.4.0
Multilingual version German UI WIN XP: [680m12(Build9286)]" and "1.1.4".

I believe that this is a bug, at least the behaviour is not in accordance to
Help text:

Under headline "Shortcut Keys for OOo-dev Writer" I read:
"Ctrl+Arrow Right | Go to end of word
But in fact, the caret moves to right to the position in front of the next word.
This causes ugly effects, but on the other hand all other programs I tested do
work so: Seamonkey (filling this text field), "Edit Pad", "Microsoft WORKS
4.5a", "Acrobat Reader".

<shift>+<cntrl>+<right> marks all until the position in front of the next word,
and of course, when you press the 'underline' button, all marked area will be
underlined, as expected.

Currently I do not see any possibility for a solution of the reported problem.

Concerning the misleading help text, I filed a new Issue 90302

MRU->SBA: I would handle this as a "Defect", but I could not find anything about
this in the "Text-Table-Selection" spec.
