Description dstrozzi 2008-07-21 17:01:19 UTC
I am running opensuse 11.0 on an x86-64 amd chip, and I've upgraded KDE to RC1
via the kde opensuse repo. In yast, the kde package versions are all
4.0.99-15.2.

I encountered some problems w/ openoffice 2.4.1 (taskbar flickering, extra
carriage return when copying from OOo to other apps), so I installed the beta
version of OOo 3, again from the opensuse repo. Yast versions: 2.99.25-12.1.

This introduced some severe problems. One is that accessing certain menu items
freezes the entire KDE session! Nothing I do in the GUI then works. I then
have to start a text console (ctrl-alt-f1), login as root, and issue reboot.
The menu items this happens with are: open, save as, export. I got the problem
with at least one of these in writer, calc, and impress. Needless to say,
given how long it takes to perform one test and reboot, I'm not in the mood to
explore this systematically.

It's interesting that these menu items want to access a list of files. Other
dialog boxes (print, things not on the file menu) work fine.

could you please check one thing ?

change into the openoffice.org3/program directory
enter the following command into the shell
export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen
./soffice

If the office is starting and KDE does not freeze anymore then please comment here.

I just did this. /usr/lib64/ooo3/program is the directory I ran soffice from.
There are still problems, but they are "softer" and don't freeze up the entire
system. In particular, "open" and "export" do nothing, while "save as" can
freeze oowriter. However, I can get to other programs, and Ctrl-Esc opens
ksysguard which lets me kill soffice processes. By the way, this program
reveals there are who soffice processes running, one zombie. Killing the
non-zombie one gets rid of oowriter.

The variable setting did something though, in that the menu fonts looks different.

I installed opensuse 11.1 alpha 1, on the same x86-64 system (destroying the old
installation). This includes Ooo 2.99.25, and KDE 4.1 RC1.

The open and save as menus still misbehave. If I go to open, nothing happens.
If I then go to save as, the system freezes as described before. A login to
text console to reboot is needed. I haven't tried export since I don't feel
like wasting more time rebooting.

In addition, it is hard to get more than one OOo component to start. I can
start one, with Alt-F2 (brings up command runner in KDE) and then say oocalc.
However, if I try Alt-F2 ooimpress or oowriter, nothing happens. top shows only
one soffie.bin process, and nothing else that seems obviously ooo related.

I can, however, start oocalc and then goto new document... text and get an
oowriter window. Interesting.

I tried setting the environment var someone suggested. The same problems happen
(can't start 2 components from command line, open, save as menus don't work).
The text in menus is a much bigger font, so setting the var. does something...

I consider these problems quite serious. Not being to open a document, or have
a text doc and spreadsheet open simultaneously, is a real problem. I have no
clue if it's an OOo or opensuse issue.

Someone, maybe from opensuse, suggested this fix, which works:

Tools -> Options -> General -> use OOo dialogs.

Now everything is fine. I guess if this isn't selected, OOo tries to use some
native dialogs, in this case KDE? If so, this interfacing isn't working.

I hope they can setup opensuse such that, at least for the x86-64 release, the
default is OOo dialogs. I have no idea how a normal person would figure out to
do this...

The fix also worked for me. I upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04 64bit, OOo 2.4, KDE3
to Kubuntu 8.10 64bit, OOo 3, KDE 4.1.

But I would like to use the Kubuntu file selection boxes again.

All you hints pointing to an OOo version distributed by you Linux vendor. This
behavior can't be reproduced with the native OOo.Please refer to your linux
distributor.
