Description tzadikv 2008-08-20 13:33:22 UTC
I am on Ubuntu Hardy -- OpenOffice 2.4.1 -- with all Ubuntu updates applied (I
don't understand the "version" field above.. there is no option for 2.4.1)

Here is the issue:

I have been printing successfully from OpenOffice using my Brother MFC-210C
printer successfully for a long time. Then suddenly, I could not print from any
OpenOffice app. When I click Print, the "Printer" notification icon in the
bottom panel comes on for about 1 second, and the printer's LCD says "Receiving
Data" for about the same amount of time, but nothing prints. All other
applications (i.e. Abiword, Gnumeric, Firefox, gedit) continue to print fine.

This problem comes and goes seemingly randomly. I will suddenly find that
OpenOffice prints fine then suddenly a few weeks later it stops working. It has
gone on and off several times over the past several months. At all times, all
other apps continue to print fine.

I have seen others with Brother printers that have exactly the same experience
(see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/255161)

I have tried reinstalling the Printer driver drivers (both lp and cups -- latest
versions from the Brother site), power cycling the computer and printer...
nothing like that helps.

This was determined to be a bug in the program 'file' misdetecting the file type
of a postscript file.
