Description captain_buckethead 2008-09-18 23:56:44 UTC
When I am using Open Office Writer, When I click on the scroll bar at right
side of page to scroll through text, the scroll locks in the 'on position' and
I cannot get the scrolling to stop before it reaches the beginning or the end
of the document, depending on whether I scroll either up or down.

OS: WinXP Professional SP2
Platform:Dell Inspiron 3500
Ram: 256 Mb Ram
Application: OOo-dev 3.0.0 DEV300m30(Build 9345)

MRU->SBA: I remember that we one had the problem, that the scrollbar was running
on and on though one already released the mouse button... you know the dup?

I can't reproduce this issue in OOo310m9 (PC, Windows XP)
My steps:
1.Open new document.
2.Write some text.
3.Click on the scroll bar at right side of page to scroll through text.
  Releas the mouse button.
The scroll stops and doesn't lock in the 'on position'.

Similar problem occurs in several other cases, as mentioned in 99347:

"2. Same problem when you press PageUp/PageDown for more than an instand. The
scrolling should stop immediately when the user releases the scrolling-buttons.

3. Same problem when you click in the text and hold down the mouse-button to
mark some paragraphs. if the selection you want to make doesn't fit on 1 screen,
you are obliged to move the mouse up or down to start a smooth scrolling - which
you'll never be able to control once it has started. Very uncomfortable."

I have the same problems. Very uncomfortable.

Not reproducible for me!
Problem here really limited to WRITER or also visible in other OOo applications?
This one might be a DUP of Issue 89407?

I have tried since, using build 9420, to reproduce this problem of scroll bar
sticking 'on' when navigating down text, but with no success.

I mistakenly put my comments regarding this problem in 89407. please refer to that comment and figure out how to put it in with this one. I will try to see if the smooth scrolling on.off thing works if I can find where that setting is. thanks!! ps I have the same problem in the scrolling of a writer document on my iMac 10.5.4 OS.

I was unable to replicate this bug on my home laptop (Windows 7 OS) against Open office version 3.4.1

I executed the following steps:

1.Opened a new document in Writer and created several pages with some text (I wanted a larger document to be able to scroll through)

2.Using my mouse, I started (held my mouse click) and released through various points in the document using the scroll slider button. It started and stopped without issues.

3.Using my mouse, I started (held my mouse click) and released through various points in the document using the scroll bar area (not with button). It started and stopped without issues.

4.Using my mouse, I started (held my mouse click) and released through various points in the document using the scroll bar arrow buttons on top and bottom of scroll bar. It started and stopped without issues.

Follow-up Tests

•I tested using the arrow buttons on keyboard instead of mouse. Starting & stopped this way without issues.

•I tested using the PGUP & PGDN buttons on keyboard. This worked as expected as well and the scrolling worked as expected (start & stop scrolling).

I was also not able to replicate executing same steps against Open Office Version 3.3 on an XP machine.

I also have the runaway scrolling problem on my netbook running Windows 7 Starter. I have two text documents that I converted from WordPerfect 12 to Word doc files, then opened with Open Office Writer v. 3.4.1. The longer document (236 pages) has the scrolling problem, but the shorter one (8 pages) does not. I can get it to stop by pressing the Fn key and F5 (adjust screen brightness). I'm wondering if hidden codes in the document are causing this, because Navigator shows several bookmarks and comments in it that I don't remember putting in it when it was in WordPerfect.
Comment 14 Michael 2013-03-22 05:31:15 UTC
I discovered that the runaway scrolling only happens when I have the Styles and Formatting window or the Navigator window open. If I close all function windows, then the scrolling problem does not happen.
