Description thelonesoldier 2008-09-23 23:35:14 UTC
The word "archaeology" is spelled incorrectly as "archeology" in the default
English-language dictionary in OOo 2.4.1.

Additionally, the word "axe" is missing from the dictionary, although it
contains "ax".

Additionally, "naive" is autocorrected to "naïve", but "naïve" is not in the
dictionary.

Reassigned to SBA.
Comment 2 andreschnabel 2008-10-29 12:47:42 UTC
confirmed using OOo 3.0.0 final using EN-US dictionaries

"archeology" is spelled correctly now in the dictionary but the other problems
still exist:

"axe" is missing from the dictionary
"naive" is autocerrected to "naïve" but this is missing form the dictionary
Comment 3 thelonesoldier 2008-10-29 18:55:58 UTC
ARCHAEOLOGY is still not in the dictionary. Apparently archeology is an
acceptable spelling but it is relatively uncommon: 22 million web hits for
archaeology vs. 4.8 million for archeology. The top result for "archeology"
is "archAeology.com". The Wikipedia article is titled "archaeology". I have two
textbooks which use "archaeology" in the title.

sorry - "archeology" is indeed still wrong - so all problems still exist
Comment 5 hosseini 2009-03-31 05:27:29 UTC
Both spelling are correct.the problem is the UK and US dictionary. Archaeology
and axe are the British spelling which are not recognized by the US
dictionary.By changing the dictionary to UK the American spelling will be
underlined! so which ever dictionary you prefer you can add the word to the
dictionary.I prefer British!

Archaeology is not just a British spelling. It seems to be a widely preferred
spelling - again, you can compare volume of web search results for a better
idea. Just now I searched both spellings again:

"Archeology" - 723,000 results
"Archaeology" - 40,800,000 results

As you can see, the number of results for "archaeology" outnumbers
the 'American' spelling by FORTY MILLION. Both spellings should be included in
the American dictionary.

I live in the US, but I am much more used to the spellings "axe"
and "archeology".

*sigh* Of course I spelled that wrong... I meant to say I am more used to the
spelling "archaeology", not "archeology"
