Description bmcneely0 2008-12-12 22:16:00 UTC
It would be nice to have inserted files appear as an icon in Writer like MS Word
does. Then you can double click and see the file. I get documents from MS Word
users and can open files inserted in like this, but I can't add new/updated
files in the same manner.

We find this invaluable as we do a lot of reports in this way - where we embed
the backing data into the document.

Comment 3 globetrot 2009-02-26 18:41:02 UTC
OK - I think I figured this out.

1. Insert Object -> OLE Object
2. Create New -> Further Objects
3. "Create from File" radio button on the left.
4. Click the "Display as icon" checkbox to the right.

Can the others also try this and confirm it works fine? If yes - then we can
probably transfer this bug to the docs team to update the product documentation
accordingly.

Screen Grab of Insert OLE Object dialog
Comment 5 bmcneely0 2009-02-26 23:28:51 UTC
I tried following these steps:
1. Insert Object -> OLE Object
2. Create New -> Further Objects
3. "Create from File" radio button on the left.
4. Click the "Display as icon" checkbox to the right.

But I don't have a Display as icon checkbox. See attached screen grab.Tested on
OO 3.0 Windows and OO 3.0.1 Mac.

I suspect you're not following the same steps as I did - it's actually not
intuitive at all, and I'm attaching the screen captures here.

1. Insert Object -> OLE Object
2. Create New -> Further Objects -

3. "Create from File" radio button on the left. -

4. Click the "Display as icon" checkbox to the right.

My primary environments are Mac OS X and OpenSuse 10.3. Testing OO 3.0.1 the
Further Objects isn't there on those but it is on Windows. Any chance it'll
make its way to Mac or Linux? On my Mac I have received MS Word docs with
embedded files as icons.

With OOo 3.1 on Linux, I have neither the "Further Objects" item, nor the
"Display as icon" option.

As I understand it, OLE is something developed by MS for Windows, and it only
works well on that platform. I guess OOo includes some support for it on other
platforms, but it seems to be incomplete.
Comment 12 Mathias_Bauer 2009-05-25 12:47:51 UTC
Mikhail, do we have any plans or concepts to support "iconified" objects on any
other platform as Windows?
Comment 13 mikhail.voytenko 2009-05-25 14:04:25 UTC
The iconified objects are supported on all platforms already. The only missing
functionality is the possibility to insert such object. The implementation was
done as a part of MS-interoperability improvement, and was intended to handle
imported MS-documents with iconified objects.

This enhancement request looks like a duplicate to issue 61144 for me.
