Description dnomier 2008-12-15 00:46:15 UTC
I wanted to copy an “amount†from an OOo-writer document into a Calc cell.
In that operation I pasted one or more leading blanks from the Writer document
into the Calc sheet cells.
Those leading blanks are not (as what one would expect) ignored during
conversion by the Calc program.
They don't trigger any error message or warning when they are pasted into the
Calc cells, but they manage to sufficiently screw up the program to produce “an
error in the calculation†that could easily be overlooked.

Remark: I tried to attach a Calc file that clearly shows the problem but I
couldn't find out how to attach something. I can be reached via dnomier@yahoo.com

It's a good question. It is in the contents of the cell that made a mistake
which caused a unknown amount. It is easy that if allowed to change the member
content of the cell.

Verified PC platform, Windows Vista Home Premium OS with version DEV300m37.
Steps:
1. Copy number with some leading blanks at Writer document
2. Paste into the Calc document cell - format cell is number general, but it is
aligned to the left as text
3. Calculate SQRT("number"), it is = 0
4. Try to change format cell to any other format, such as percent, currency,
scientific... - nothing changes, format is really text and not changeable.

This problem can be resolved by using Edit >Pste Special > Unformatted text.

In addition:
1. Format cells is Number General by default and doesn't shange when you input
text
2. It's impossible to input number with leading blanks - Calc converses it in
real number. In the similar mannar it converses 1.00E+003 into scientific and
2009-01-01 into date.
3. I tried to copy a number with leading blanks from different sources, the
results are:

Writer - text in not changeable format
MS Word - number
Notepad - number
Direct input - number
MS Excel Text format - text in not changeable format

Dear all,
It looked like I didn't explain well enough on how to reproduce the problem. I
will now attach a Writer file and a Calc file (the XP version) to better
demonstrate how to reproduce the error.
First get a number with leading "white space" IN A TABLE. Then copy that "cell"
from the Writer table to a Calc cell.
The Calc cell still contains the leading "white spaces".
If such a cell is added, the value of the content is put to zero without any
warning or error message.
I tried this with OO version 3.0 on Windows XP as well as with Kubuntu and could
reproduce the same problem.
Kind regards
Reimond
