Description Gunnar M. 2001-04-22 16:54:40 UTC
NetBeans IDE 3.2 RC 2 hangs when starting up. It does not entirely hang.
According to the Windows Task Manager it responds and it DOES respond to
minimization, restore and resize. Also according to the Windows Task Manager it
(runide) consumes "I/O other bytes" while "hanging". However the single window
remains grey, dull and empty. My suspicion is that it has something to do with
that I've chosen to run it in a single window with internal frames, rather than
in separate windows. Possibly it has something to do with that I've mounted a
VSS synchronized directory and that the VSS is set up to work with the database
in our office, 56 kbps away. It worked nicely the first time after the
installation and immediately after the VSS connection was set up. The first
time I restarted it this problem appeared and I can't get out of it. For your
information, I do have Forte 2.0 CE installed concurrently. If you want me to
send a screen shot of the hanging window (a completely grey window with a
proper window title row), please tell me. I'm very willing to assist you
finding this problem and don't hesitate to mail me on
gunnar.mjoberg@cinnober.com or call me on my cellular on +46 70 893 38 11.

I'm not sure if the product category is workspaceswitcher. It has to to with
the overall windows management and startup.

Besides, I've installed JDK 1.3 on the same partition, (%SystemDrive%=D:)
Thanks in advance.

The splash screen remains present. The last thing seen in it is "opening main
window". The splash screen is hidden by the main window coming up. I can <alt>-
<tab> back to the splash screen, but also this screen is hanging (completely
white) and with a Java coffee cup icon seen from the <alt>-<tab> menu.
Hopefully this sheds some light to the problem. Cheers, Gunnar Mjöberg

I reinstalled now but the problem remains. After reinstallation, it showed that
it started the VSS scan ("LIST_SCAN_REDIR [or something like that] running"),
indicating that there were remaining entries in the registry, possibly. Other
interesting facts are that the installation procedure does not find the JDK on
D:\jdk1.3\bin by itself (as it does for my colleagues) and that the
installation procedure insists on installing on C:, while my SystemDrive
environment variable points out D:

Thanks for looking at this problem. If I finally get it working, I'll inform
you. (The next step is to reinstall the JDK, in order to see if the NetBeans
installation procedure automatically finds the JDK.

Definitely not a 'workspaceswitcher' problem. I'm re-assigning to vcsgeneric,
but feel free to assign to someone else if it's not yours.
Comment 5 Jan Chalupa 2001-04-23 16:28:44 UTC
Reported against 3.2.
Comment 6 Martin Entlicher 2001-04-23 16:56:21 UTC
It's hard to find out the problem from this description. Could you please attach
a thread dump when the IDE is frozen ? (You get the thread dump by CTRL-BREAK in
the console window.)
Comment 7 Martin Entlicher 2001-04-24 16:27:18 UTC
Since this issue was resolved by reinstallation of NetBeans, closing this as
invalid. If this bug appears again reopen this issue and attach the thread dump.
Comment 8 Jiri Kovalsky 2001-06-11 14:21:50 UTC
No more response from submitter so I consider it as invalid too.
Comment 9 Quality Engineering 2003-07-01 13:01:42 UTC
Resolved for 3.4.x or earlier, no new info since then -> closing.
