The freemarker engine/lib currently integrated in NetBeans, version 2.3.8, is seriously outdated and should be replaced by a newer version.
version 2.3.8 was released july 9th 2006!

The latest stable release is version 2.3.19, released february 29th 2012.
Being still 2.3.x it claims to be compatible with 2.3.8, but with loads of feature enhancements and bug-/security-fixes.

Agreed. Martine, have a closer look at 2.3.19 and if you see no problems, upgrade to it in trunk. Thanks.

I've tested version 2.3.19 and it works fine for me. All tests are passed, manual testing including new features introduced after 2.3.8 did not reveal any issues.
