99% of the time I change all my VM graphs to be
fixed scale.  It would be very convenient if the
software allowed the user to set this to always be
the case.

Agreed, I've just started to implement a way to store various UI
selection (such as "do not show this anymore" options for dialogs,
filter selection in results, etc.).

There is a separate issue for this, logging dependency on it.

John, is what you call fixed scale the current default mode (which we 
call "Continue at fixed scale")? Assuming it is, so I am changing this issue 
description to track the request to make this type of ui selections persistent
